I've had two small subscriptions with MTN for years now, last year I renewed these two subscription at a local MTN shop. Last month I found out that someone has opened a third subscription using my details and MTN debited my bank account for their first month's subscription!
Today I received three MTN detailed usage bills, my normal two and this fraudulent one. This individual has run up R880 in additional usage with MTN who now want to charge to me at the end of the month!
I've tried phoning the MTN help number (135) which is no help at all as it's just a recorded voice. I've tried submitting an online MTN fraud report but after completing the form and clicking 'submit' nothing happens!
MTN must be one of the most hopeless companies out there. How the hell can they allow someone to open a new subscription using my name without even seeing an original ID document?
I'm about to go to the police and open a fraud case against MTN.
Totally disgusted with MTN.

See under "Complaints Management" for more options before a police report ? :

Also, if you're located near enough to one of their Regional Offices, then try going there and getting them to resolve it for you ; the names & addresses should be listed within the 1st few pages of your MTN invoices (on the back of one of them).

Get them to give you a reference number for your case.

Yes you need to go into an Mtn direct store not a franchise store, they will be able to help the op in the former, just phone in advance and ask what documentation he’ll need to bring with. Probably ID book proof of residence and an affidavit from the police stating what has happened/that the new account was opened fraudulently.

Victims of Fraud

If you suspect that you have been impersonated, and accounts have been opened or loans taken out in your name, you should contact the credit provider or debt collector in question to establish if you have been a victim of fraud.

You will be required to provide information that proves that you did not enter into the relevant financial agreement yourself. If the credit provider is a SAFPS Member, a victim of impersonation filing and/or Protective Registration will be loaded on to SAFPS database on your behalf. You must also report the fraud to the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Once you have established your innocence, the credit provider will issue you a letter confirming that you have been the victim of impersonation. Apply for Protective Registration using the form below or via the SAFPS mobile app and submit all necessary supporting documentation.

Should the credit provider not be an SAFPS Member, send us the supporting documentation and SAFPS can then create a Protective Registration and Victim filing on our database, and issue you with a PR number and VIC number. Your ID number will be flagged on our database to show that you have been a victim of impersonation, which alerts future credit providers to take additional care when confirming your identity.

SAFPS will also issue you with a Victim of Impersonation letter which you can share with credit providers in the future to assist you in verifying, that you are who you claim to be.

Thank you all for your help.

This is so worrying as this guy has been running up huge phone charges by phoning Bhutan!

Mondo, the MTN agent that has allowed this to happen, has not replied to my email that included an affidavit, certified ID and proof of address, they appear to be completely disinterested in sorting this mess out.

MTN themselves claim that I have to deal with this Mondo company, as the contract wasn't taken out with MTN themselves, although they are the service provider....

I will be opening a fraud case with the police, for what good it will do, on Monday.

MTN is sadly in a state where they can not be trusted anymore.

I fear someone is trying the same thing with me and so far has been unsuccessful. I keep on getting emails and OTP's in connection with opening a new contract. I've phoned them a dozen times and after waiting 20+ mins each time I am left with some poor sod who doesn't know what to do and is no help really. At least one person could tell me that there was no new lines under my name. I **** myself lately when I get an MTN bill.

I used to be able to log in to e-services at MTN.co.za but I can no longer log in? It's like the feature has been completely removed. Google chrome is warning me that my MTN password has been "Found in data breach" and that I should change it immediately but the MTN website has no such functionality. I think they had a moerse breach and they just took the whole e-services offline.

On top of this now I see my contract is going up 5% mid-contract.

I will be canceling my contract at the end of this period and ending a 20 year relationship with them. Don't care if they offer me an iPhone 13 for R29 a month I will still say no.

Their website access to manage your contract is broken. Weird that, suppose it’s more cost effective to only need to maintain the app.

I tried purchasing a phone through them online, its very dodgy. I suspect their employees are finding loops to do these fraudulent activities.

I would like to know whether your issue have been resolved? I'm currently sitting with the same situation. They have registered two additional contacts on my son's contract on 7th of January 2024. My bill for 1 Feb. was over R2600, where it used to be R398. I've e-mailed MTN customer care and fraudhelp numerous times. I've sent an affidavit, detailed invoices with hilighted fraudulent chages, ID, 7xsignature as requesed etc. I've immediately stopped the debit order. End of Feb. my bill was over R4300. I've manually paid the R398 to keep my side clean. My son's phone is now suspened and he is unable to make outgoing calls. I've e-mailed them again today. I stll have no answer. Would very much like to know what steps you had to take to resolve this? Thank you very much in advance.
