I left my phone in the car last week, unfortunately some ****ers broke into my car,and everything was taken.
Then I went to MTN to claim for insurance, they said I am not coverd because I left the phone unattended. It is their policy. It is so ****ing ridiculous.
I am paying R101 to insure a cellphone, now it's got stolen, and they don't want to give me another phone, wft?? It is a Nokia E90, it is valued at about R8000.
What must I do now??
Sorry for the language, I am so pissed off!!

Never insure stuff with a company that knows nothing about insurance...my motto anyway. As far as i'm concerned a Telecoms company that's dishing out insurance are simply milking you for extra cash , it's NOT about making it convenient for you [even though you might have thought so when you took it] .

So yea, i pay less for cellphone insurance at a real insurance company, and at least they tell me -clearly- when is it covered or not. AND then i can still pay extra to make them cover for whatever thing i might think of.

It's still kinda strange how they can say that about the "unattended" part....how far must it be from you to be "unattended" ? [Do they even define it in their contract?] If they steal my phone out of my house while i was showering...[obviously not with my cellphone] what does that fall under?

But yea, i think MTN/Voda insurance only covers the bare minimum, which seems to be only manufacturing defects. They'll even give you hassles if the phone got wet ...i mean wtf, you insure your phone for a reason...

I think the car thing is specially specified in Vodacom's contract - not sure about MTN's. The day I read that, I moved all my phone to my household insurer.

VC's contract, a while ago, used to mention that the phone was not covered if left in a car, locked or otherwise.

Edit: Tell them you were in shock and are only remembering properly now. The car was broken into moments before you returned to it, they then attacked you and stole your cellphone and watch.

I got hijacked two years ago and the hijackers drove off with my car + SE P900i.

So I went to MTN and had a brand new SE P910i delivered the next day via courier.

I guess MTN (it's actually CIM) will be cheesed off at guang, cos it's a bloody expensive phone and i'm wondering if the phone was not somehow visible, cos that might explain why they broke into the car.

Just remember that SO many people are having 'accidents' with their mobile phones on a daily basis, just to get an 'upgrade' quicker....

I have two phones,Tytn and E90. I use Tytn most of the time, and E90 just is just used for web browsing and GPS, so I leave it in the car sometimes, because I don't want to carry to big bricks all the time.
( I thought the E90 was a nice phone when it first came here, but no, the keypad scracths internal screen so badly, and other reasons make me dislike this phone any more).

I have just read the policy again, there is no where mention it the phone can not be left in the vehicle. I will show them the policy tomorrow and will try Broken1's trick.

Thanks

Broken1's trick will never work unless it is on the statement you gave the cops. Besides they will be supicious as soon as you change stories and will refute the claim. They will tell you that they dont believe you and it is up to prove that your (new) version is correct.

Look, if the ts and cs of the policy do not stipulate that you are not covered whilst the phone is unattended or in a car, then you have a claim. If it exists anywhere though, you aint covered for it.

Is the car insured. If so do you have some kind of additional cover such as out and about or something. Maybe you could claim there.

If its not stipulated in the clauses of the contract you can surely fight it out. I mean its a R8000 phone so its a good idea to fight. That said because the phone is so expensive they might be even less likely or willing to replace it.

Good luck and keep us posted. In SA never leave anything unattended.

You so dof!! Didnt you know this???

Well atleast you know now, you should have said it was in your "briefcase" unseen same case number.

As far as I know the only reason why they won't pay out is if the phone was not locked/hidden. If it was visible then you don't stand a chance. Seeing you used your E90 for GPS and Internet Only and your phone was in the car I assume it was probably on the dashboard or in some kind of holder for GPS use. Am I right?

If not then they will just have to give you a new phone.

I must agree with diabolus. If you want to ensure your phone, do it at a proper insurer, not your cellular provider.

Very long ago I had a Motorola V3690. It was the latest and one of the best phones at the time. The phone got stolen from inside the house but unfortunately the phone was taken out on my contract but my wife used it with her contract. Because of that they didn't want to pay me out anthing. That was also the day I decided to cancel my insurance with MTN.

I carefully read the policy again, and find out it is stipulated that I am not covered while the phone is unattened in the car. I can't believe I missed it twice!!

The car insurance company don't give a **** about this.

Now it seems there is nothing I can do about it. I lost a lot of money!

Eish, i was just about to sign up to ensure my phone with MTN, guess i will have to think about this again.

A positive from your experience, at least we all know the deal about leaving the phone in a car unattended - you have helped many i am sure. Thanks!

The phone was not visible, and I never put my phone on the dashboard, it was in the box in front of pessenger seat(don't know how to call it).

But they still don't want to cover me.

I just want to warn people do not insure the cellphone with MTN(CIM),and if you do, just do not leave your cellphone in your car unattended.

CIM even don't have a office in Cape Town, I have no where to go to lodge a complain. They totally sux!!

A phone in a car is only covered if it is in the boot or underneath the parcel tray in a hatchback, its like that with 90% of insurers be those normal insurance companies or the network bundled ones.

Next time buy a phone that fits in your pocket!:p
