My first post on mybroadband... I took out a new contract with MTN asking them to port my number from CellC. My phone was delivered on Wednesday 17 October, and after not hearing anything further from MTN SP (and my CellC sim seeming to stop working), I switched sim cards on the weekend and found that the MTN sim works. To my horror I realised the next day that my number had not been ported, but I'm now using a new number.

I called MTN on the Monday. They claim that they couldn't get hold of me to do the porting, and their system thus automatically activated the MTN sim. Apparently there is nothing they could do about it and its all my fault (!!!). They can't do the port anymore either, and thus I'm stuck with a new number.

I then contacted them asking to cancel my contract (they told me I have 10 working days to do this if I return the phone in its original packaging). However, I was told that since I have used the phone "it is not in its original packaging anymore" and thus I can't cancel the contract.

I feel pretty upset and helpless. Will greatly appreciate any advice.

No, go and return it, they have not held their end of the contract. Walk into the store and ask to speak with the manager to get it sorted out, consultants/call-centers are not high enough in the chain of command.

It's a bit late to raise this nearly a year after you got the new phone.

BTW, 17 Oct was a Thursday.

:erm: He obviously meant 17th September. That's on a Wednesday. Cut the guy some slack

Thanks for the comments. I meant to say 17 September!

Is it true that once the contract has been activated with the wrong number it is impossible to port my old number to the contract? This would be my first option as I don't have all the pieces of the packaging anymore.

CellC allows it, Vodacon doesn't. Don't know about MTN though.

Hi There

Can you PM me the Cell C number you wanted to port to MTN as well as the incorrect number the MTN contract was activated on. I will try and assist to rectify this.

Thanks
