I registered for MTN's loyalty points system and racked up 1800 or so points over the last few weeks. I then transferred 1500 to my wife. A day or so later, when checking my bill on 16202, I suddenly got a bill for over R1200.

Phoning MTN confirmed that they have a problem where points are seen as cash and they are looking into it. They did say that hopefully it will be resolved before my debit order kicks in and relieves me of my cash!

This bit makes your mental more scary than MTN loyalty points...
What's wrong with people here?

MTN reversed the Loyalty Points that was converted to Me2U airtime and credited my account with that amount. This means that they took 1500 loyalty points, converted it to airtime, billed me, reversed the transaction and then gave me R1500 back into my account. They also did not debit my account for my normal phone bill since i had a account that was in credit. Now I'm waiting for them to fix this new problem. I logged another call today. I'll wait to see if they come up with something even more crazy.

wow. shocking. i was actually going through the 141 menu today, wondering how the transfer thing works.
thanks for the heads up.

i done a transfer from my spare sim
it worked for me

I have had endless issues with purchasing anything with the points, I have added both SMS and data bundles and they have never been loaded against my account but my points have been deducted as though they had. I have spent (wasted) many hours with MTN customer service over this and their ridiculous MTN Active system which is even worse...

What type of contract or price plan are you on? I've never had a problem with my 3 lines.

I have 4 contracts with MTN, 3 voice and one data and one of the voice contracts has had endless issues when trying to use data and SMS bundles. I have had trouble with all 4 when trying to use MTN Active to add ad-hoc bundles (suddenly billed me monthly for ad-hoc) then had issues with monthly SMS bucket bundles not being applied etc.

According to MTN, my problem with loyalty points being seen as airtime only effected certain customers. This probably means only those that complained. The rest that had a problem didn't notice since it may have been a small amount. Also, it seems it happened during a short period and then they fixed it.

Bump

What is the latest with MTN points? My contract is ending and I am moving to prepaid.

Q1: Do my points expire on the move to prepaid?

Q2: Are there catches in transferring them to a friend? Seems like it from above but has it changed?

Then finally, my airtime I have on contract: Does it also expire on cancellation? Guess the answer is "Yes"

Not sure about the expiry of points, I saw on their site somewhere T's and C's for loyalty points. Maybe it has rule on that. You can transfer the points to any MTN number already registered for loyalty points. No catches, although you can only transfer set amounts, like 500, 1000 and 2000 I think. Not sure if you can do multiple transfers or maybe if there is a daily transfer limit.

Thanks. Transferred them to 2 friends. On the premise that MTN will cancel them when I migrate to pre-paid. Not that they buy much anyway, but the friends still appreciated them.

Now I will have to wait and see what happens to my contract airtime if I am able to migrate to prepaid. After many faxes and emails, starting in early December 2013, they finally acknowledged my cancellation of the 24 month contract a few days ago. Just prior to that I had put a stop on the debit order. It goes off on around the 7th of the month and the contract expires on 20 Feb 2014. Given that I am sure they bill in advance, I figure I do not need to pay anymore. And if I owe anything it is surely far less than the R299 they charged every month.

And as expected, I had a debit go off and then was reversed by the bank a few days ago. I am operating on the principle that it will be near impossible to get money back from them. Let them come tell me how much I owe them.

Well I'm sitting with a R67000.00 data bill due to these rubbish loyalty points! I hope this issue was resolved.
