I'm trying to sort a friend out and mobile broadband is not a strong suite of mine.

Short story:
He has an iPad with a Vodacom sim, he is trying to use it for his MTN mail.

We can receive mail, no problem, but no matter what settings we try we cannot get it to send mail.

Is it possible to send mail using the Vodacom sim but with MTN smtp settings?

No. Unless MTN SMTP server supports authentication and mail client has selected that option.
AFAIK, it doesn't, so settings must be changed to point to the Vodacom SMTP server.

But you need a username/password for Vodacom correct?

Don't ask me why he would not just go and get a MTN sim...
:(

Set your SMTP server to smtp.vodacom.co.za. Should work.

I can't as my tablet only gives me 2 boxes to fill. One for email address and one for password.
For MTN you need 3 boxes. Both of the above and another for cell number.
To bypass this I go to the website https://mail.mtnloaded.co.za/mail/login.php
From there you can send/receive mail even with a VC sim.
