MTN, Microsoft will work together

purchasing internet connectivity and an Intel PC running Microsoft Windows Starter Edition software

So it's really an extortion racket to sell a crippled version of Windows.

No fanks, I'll stick to Linux and iBurst, thankyooverrymuch...

what about WPA and WGA issues? Once bitten, twice shy, no thanks...

I don't want to see people getting hitted for R2/Mb after going over their cap... that's assuming they'll be getting Internet access from MTN...

an intel pc and windows starter edition...Maybe if we're lucky, he'll add in a free copy of wolfenstein 3d too

So if MTN puts Ubuntu on those PC's they should be able to make it even cheaper right? Right?!?

You could say that about any other company's product which tries to help the less affluent masses.

Price is only part of the problem, so while a flavour of Linux solves that, it doesn't solve the other problems. Just remember the people who are going to be using the computers!

Fly on the wall ...

I would be really interested to know about the target demographics an initiative like this is aiming at. In South Africa, we have a dual-fold problem of increasing pc penetration rates and internet connectivity.

While making it cheaper for people to afford computers, there's no way to ensure these same people will be able to obtain 'cheap internet access' unless there are sufficient coverage of wireless signals to provide an adequate service or to ensure that Telkom / SNO-T have delpoyed enough local loop infrastructure to reach the masses.

Unless answers to the above issues are forthcoming, this does (sadly) look another money-making racket dressed up to look good.

That is not the only thing they have in mind.

Microsoft had Transmeta to make a special version of their Intel compatible CPU for their "pay as go" PC's for the thirld world as an answer to the MIT $100 laptop.

You need to run Windows and then purchase pay-as-you-go vouchers to keep it working.

Drug dealers use the same tactics I believe.

no! not mtn and microsoft! whats the world coming to!!! fffs mtn has already crap service now they wan't even more money up their ****

yeah, strange. Its the largest. but not S.A's largest

Where is Microsoft helping them? They're offering finance, nothing more. Now if they were offering to include the full version of Windows XP at no additional cost, at the very least, and preferably also subsidising the price of the hardware, then they could be said to be doing something. Selling a crippled version of Windows and PC on finance isn't.

They're looking for some way to dump Windows XP Totally Crippled Edition and make some money on it (because no-one wants to buy it). They're aiming to scam and exploit poorer people, just everyone else.

Drugs dealers don't give anything away or sell cheap samples. Their products will always be in demand so they don't have to.
