Those that are using wireless internet connections to play WoW. I have to be on the road again in a two weeks time to start up a new refinery and would like to know which of Vodacom or Mtn would give me best options for traveling and playing WoW.

I'll be bias if I was to comment :D

I can confirm, I have never had any ping above 1k for more than a few minutes. I average a ping of 500 - 800 ms always. Last night was a tad bad, however I was told MTN was down for an hour of which I didn't know.

I'm on MTN btw

LOL... I hope you're on MTN... Else I'd be worried.

Haven't used MTN for gaming, but for internet speeds, I've had much better response than I did when I was with Vodacom (besides sending emails).

O/T: Tell me something... I see your location as Constantia, Roodepoort - is that the MTN office just off 14th Avenue?

Thanks for the reply,
I should probably also add that I will most likely use it in areas where the reception may not always be at its best. Why do we always build refineries so far away from civilization :(

Correct. I live about 3 minutes drive from the office :D

I play WoW mainly on Edge (GSM is not as congested as UMTS) in my area.
I have better latency that way. On weekends I play on HSDPA. The speed doesn't really do much for ur latency. It's the quality of the signal, I find edge better for that IMHO :o

I saw the office there the other day for the first time, I'm across the road at SANBS/Sanlam, next to the City Lodge. Also 3min from home.

How odd.

Cannot comment on MTN but as to Vodacom, their service has degraded over the past few months to a point where I ordered ADSL.

Refer to http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=69209 for more info. There are times when it's great but it's instability that really peeves me off.

AFAIK, Pitull is running on MTN's EDGE and seems to get pings than my 3G with full signal.

In general I used to get around 600 - 800 but I seem to average 900ms lately and with lots of lag spikes.

Nice area :D

Ok but back on topic

Hopefully Jase could post on his Vodacom speeds... He moved to ADSL lately. We did a raid the other night.. a full raid group on Duskwood. Allot of people DC'd because of lag. I must admit I had my share of lag spikes, However never DC'd. The strange thing is that the people using ADSL where the DC'd ones

hehe

ok Jase posted :/

He's to quick for me :D

Think MTN would be a good option me thinks, as we have a MTN tower on our farm aswell so atleast I will get good signals when I go down there over some weekends. On the other hand I have been with Vodacom for the last 8 years and used Vodafone while I lived in Germany :/

Either way i would say both is a good solution. I can't say that if I was on one or the other that I would choose one or the other. I would maybe suggest this.

Use 2 pre-paid sims, see which gives you best reception and latency before you commit to contract. If u intend on stay on Pre-paid.... Use Both ;) :D

Ok seems lile vodacom lines is a bit over used then, and i will have to look at mtn.
Now just to find out on the type of MTN coverage in Secunda. Will prob need to look at the available packages too.

You can check the coverage on the Website. But to have a most up to date assesment rather phone 083 900 1212

I'm on vodacom currently... me and my 2bar 3g HSDPA connection play wow with 400-1,2k latt usually. Since i dont travel, i wouldnt know which is better. Vodacom/MTN have their better moments ocasionally.

More than an hour my doggy fiend. Say 3 hours min.
Its running well now and IMHO is always better than Vodacom.

What I can do is post my speed tests and my latency when I log on tonight.

I didn't bother running a speed test last night (was too tired after work), but this morning the vodacom speed test showed a download of 1500kbps and an upload of 293kbps. I still had throughput problems though i.e. would wait a few seconds for a page to load.

Pitbulls 2 x pre-paid sims is a good idea though.
