General update on the problems seen on the Vodacom data network over the recent period:

There are 2 major categories of problems currently on the network:

1) Disconnects or no-connect when trying to access the network

This mostly affects pre-paid but there was some cases where it started affecting contract users as well. Resolution for this is to add extra capacity to handle the increase in number of subscribers trying to connect. Interim work was done to spread the load but this only gave a shobrtrelieve and the problem re-appeared last week.

The first of the upgrades, to permanently address this, happened on Saturday night and did add a substantial amount of capacity. However, I suspect when the next two (out of 11) systems are upgraded we'll see the problem finally resolved. This is expected to happen middle to late this week. (25/08)

Update - 31/08 - By early / middle Sept, we should be about 50% complete with the upgrades. This should resolve all disconnect problems on pre-paid and the other 50% should add substantial spare capacity. Except for one or two specific incidents, the disconnect problems seems to be much, much better at the moment.

2) Low international throughput

Good news on this one. Extra capacity is available and the upgrades should also happen in the next few days. Current planning is by middle of this week. (23/08)

Update - 31/08 - This is now mostly done but even more upgrades are being planned. (As always awaiting extra capacity.) Local capacity is also substantially up. Notice how many forumites are posting speeds close to 1.8M.

3) A smattering of IP-type problems.

We've seen some FTP as well as DNS issues. Please keep on reporting these with as much detail as possible, if still relevant.

Update - 31/08 - FTP problem is still intermittent and with firewall vendor.

In general the number of problems (on the 2 main issues) are much better with a numbers of days over the last week with no problems being posted. But there were one or two 'lapses' on the disconnect problem.

Hi v3g

FYI
Ramsgate - South Coast
Option
IMEI 3569360026220271
Firmware 3.15
apn internet

Will test the different length pings throughout the day.

As an example it took me 5 refreshes to get up this page to send a reply.

Cheers

Using the wrt54g3g router - is the IMEI what the router reports as IMSI : 655018200161570?

Hi

I am trying a stayalive/ping and have been up and running for 1.5 hours. Not sure if its just luck or not as I tried it the other day and it didnt help. Anyone else had any success with it?

Thanks, I should have been clearer - the router reports IMSI : 655018200161570 under a section about the Option card so I was wondering if that was equiv to an IMEI.

Thanks to Google I now know that they are not the same - yes, i should have googled first :)

Back on topic:

Area: Groot Brak
Marked improvement so far today over 3 hrs.

Just to confirm; What symptoms so you experience?

Yesterday: throughput erratic and sometimes zero, but connection persists. Disconnect and reconnect sometimes fix the problem, other times not and on occasion a disconnect / reconnect results in the option in the wrt54G3g not being able to connect to the hsdpa network for a while ("acquiring").

Today: vast improvement. If there are problems they are less noticeable.

ca.12h40
ping smtp.vodacom.co.za -
19 packets transmitted, 18 received, 5% packet loss, time 17993ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 142.276/155.750/169.921/9.453 ms

I also have the problem regularly but intermittently .. I can't seem to find any pattern. When it happens I shut down the dashboard and disconnect .. pop the card out .. put it back in and then reconnect and it usually works. Sometimes I have to keep doing it a few times, shut down, disonnect, card out, card in, reconnect until the connection "takes". Sometimes I get the impression that keeping the connection "warm" helps and sometimes not.

area: Cape Town - Plumstead
type of modem: Option card CE 0700
IMEI: 351969005573804
modem's firmware revision - where do I find this?
apn - internet

will report back fully on the pings next time it happens .. didn't have time to do it now.

major outage in Groot Brak, beginning ca. 13h38. Same symptoms as reported above:

Am on GPRS as card in router cannot connect hsdpa (or at least could not until I tried the gprs connect).

Tried ping when noticed - 100% packet loss.

Tried reconnect which APPARENTLY worked (signal str good) but then ping showed no dns info.

Rebooted router which then hung on "acquiring".

Tried gprs which acquired network and connected.

retried hsdpa - acquiring bit again.

Gprs again - and here I am.

Interesting;y, just after I posted the above, the same issue hit gprs - good signal, apparently connected but no throughput. Reconnect did not help.

Came back around 14h15, with hsdpa

This seems to come and go - Typically my download will drop right down to zero, or very close but I'll have a good signal and won't get disconnected.

Usually happens late evenings

OK, thanks. Will you do the ping thing, next time it happens and before you disconnect / shoot your PC / blow up a tower / swear incessantly at Vodacom (delete not applicable)

Can I swear incessantly at Vodacom for the massive storm that just happened in durban that played havoc with my connection ? :)

Well I like Syndyre suggestion, So I shall toddle off and find the nearest MTN tower and blow it up.. :D...

I was actually impressed, my connection only dropped twice during the whole storm and it was a fierce one, like a mini lil monsoon.. :)
