Owls get homes on MTN towers

The launch of MTN’s Owl Network project is aimed at securing urban homes for barn owls and will see 100 boxes installed in network towers.

MTN barn owl boxes are made from recycled materials, and the little houses will be installed in high-density areas in Gauteng across Johannesburg North and West, with the other provinces to follow.

Next they should look at installing some beehives near the rural base stations.

That should at least give the would-be battery thieves some fun the next time they try and do some affirmative shopping...

nice idea until the homeless start trapping/killing the owls or stealing their eggs for muti
we live in Africa after all.
There is a segment of the population that are very superstitious about owls, and in fact are very fearful of them. I don't see it happening though, as long as the boxes are placed high enough.
There also needs to be far more education done of the populace on the benefits of owls, especially the fact that they reduce the rodent as well as the snake population.

A similar project in Alex ended in tragedy, owls were killed, even after an extensive education drive. Very sad. Hopefully this one is so inconspicuous that no one even notices
