MTN PTT (Push to Talk)

Does anyone who is MTN have or will be implimenting the Push-to-Talk functionally that most new phones support?

Basically, imagine a walkie talkie function on your cellphone.
You pick a mate you want to talk to, click a button on the phone and talk. Release the button and your voice is sent over GPRS, Edge, UMTS to your mates phone. He listens to what you say, then he presses his push to talk button and you receive his message.

Works on the same principle as a walkie talkie. It's a nice idea. Imagine you just want to tell someone you are going to be late. "Hi Man, I'm going to be late". He replies "Cool". It's cheaper than making a phone call, and cheaper than sending an SMS.

Thanks, Trixter. I downloded it ... cool app. I seem to be have a blonde moment, see how to setup, implement the PTT side, are you using the PTT functions?
 
yeah I have used the ptt functions, on the 6630 all you do is hold down the select button and release when you are done talking ;) Hope this helps ;)

vodacom is currently only offering ptt to corporate customers, though, afaik

I think MTN will be doing the same but will verify

Mtn Ptt

MTN has got their PTT working .... I spoke to them @ Futurex ... also a corporate level as far as I can remember.

I must say that the Vodacom one is pretty expensive ... R299.00 or R399.00 per month and that includes ONLY 100 pushes .....makes you think doesn't it ?

Typical South african business .. rip off the consumer..

PTT is suppose to be a alternative to a short call(10 second).. so logic dictates that the cost per PTT should be less that the cost of a call per minute.. hell it should be a quarter of the cost of a minute...

When are local providers gonna realise what internation providors have already that is cellphone market is not a bout margins its about volume of customer base.. and if the cur the margins that would get most of the customers...


Number portablity might fix that.. ?
 
As far as I know the networks are testing and implimenting very slow off the ground.

The frustrating part is that the networks do not know how this can impliment the growth and all over the growth of the POC /PTT service is exponential.
Our networks are limited in their understandings of how this could revolutionise the technology.

How much is the MTN PTT service.

As per usual one other note:be careful of the Nokia PTT service is not Vodacom compliant as they seem to be on their own mission and have not complied to the OMA on the standard.

We have a signed Mkt plan that details the cost but I can't advise on the cost as yet as we haven't launched as yet


In summary: A client will have a monthly subscription and ‘every push’ will have a approx 25/35c


Currently only Nokia handsets participate in the PoC pilots but the OMA standards is planned for implementation around the end Sept \

Push to talk

I fugured out quite a cheap alternative to calling, a friend and I both have i-mate jasjars with skype loaded on it, so when we want to chat we do it through skype.

When my girlfriend was in England I called her on her cell from my cell phone using skype every day for a month, and it cost me roughly R45 in Bandwith

I guess that's one way of doing it - Use Skype which is VOIP until the network starts using a packet sniffer and starts charging R25 a meg............

Any news about this feature on the network soon.....?

I hate reading the manual of phone and find out they can do something and the network does not support it.

Just about all the new phones support it.

PS: another nice feature that would be great is 2 line on 1 SIM. (wishful thinking)
