A lot has probably been said about this!
MTN roaming rates in Africa are R2.60 / 25kb
If my maths is correct:
1kb = R0.0104 (2.60 / 25)
therefore
1 Gig = R104,000 (1 gig = +-1,000,000 kb)

I don't mind them making a profit, but this is a little absurd!
R104.000 per Gig
1Gig Pre-paid in SA is R300

Can MTN please explain this?

I suppose that they have to "pay" interconnect fees to the other operators.... some of whom they own, of course!!

But, yes, kR104/Gb is a tad excessive.

Make 600% certain your auto updates on windows and your mobile OS are switched off before you get on the plane.

Driving in the bush last week in Botswana I was in and out of reception areas, which meant I got about 15 SMSes telling me welcome to Orange, and even one from MTN telling me about orange and mascom.
Am I charged roaming for this?

MTN dont make that ridiculous profit from data roaming, they are charged absurd rates by the network from the origin of the roaming.

However, they charge those rates to other networks roaming on their network.

Apparently they USA based networks charge our operators Much more than R2.60 per 25kb, for South Africans roaming in the US

Incoming SMSs whilst roaming are not chargeable....

I cant really comment on this, we are subject to the overseas operators billing rates.
Whenever im in Germany visiting family i make use of a international prepaid sim for data, obviously cheaper.
