MTN Shares - Blacks Only!

I am trying to highlight that we are trying to "build" unity here but we have companies that refuse to sell to whites.

Ok, thanks for pointing that out.

As I mentioned I don't follow the markets, I just found it a eye opener that things like this are blacks only. Just leaves a bad taste in the mouth considering what the country has been through and what we are trying to achieve.

There is quite alot of fine print that needs to be read when buying these Zakhele shares

They did mention that you have to buy a minimum of R2000 and that you can't sell them for 3 years. I guess you have to be aware of that.

I don't think it is building unity, and I don't think treads like this are particularly productive, but you know when you just need to hear what other people think?

I would say its better shares get sold to the previously disadvantaged public. At least the average Joe gets a piece of the pie. Other BEE type deals usually involve certain always connected people and the vast majority of people see no benefits.

Aha.. Does anyone remember what happened to the Sasol shares..
Within 6 Months the share price fell lower than what the goverment offered to the "blacks"..

Besides, 6 years to have your money locked in there.. Totally a major risk.
Flip, with our Markets and Economy so volotile..We dont even know whats going to happen next week..Let aside 6 Years..

Politics aside, it still remains a very fair question as to how they judge if someone is "black" (and here I use the wide definition of "black").

Example: There are some "white" people who look "coloured" in appearance and vice versa. If you are e.g. "coloured" but look "white", how do you prove the contrary ???

Uhm. The only thing this bee shares really does is lower the entry for black people to join in trading shares. There is no real significant saving that they get. It basically goes like this. Mtn sells its shares at 90% of its value to mtn zahkele. I dont know if the percentage is correct. Then mtn zahkele sells its shares to the black public at R20 a share. But it has to make up for the value that it purchased the mtn sharez and the have other admin costs too. So in essence they are buying a sixth of a share. What mtn gains out of this fare outweights the discount they gave.

The numbers used are just hypothetical. I dont know to what degree mtn finaced this. But mtn wont do something that would hurt themselves.

I think mentioned that mtn was funding it, but as you mentioned I not sure as to how much though.

I suspect this is done via your ID number. I doubt somebody looks at you and then makes a call.

I suspect this is done via your ID number. I doubt somebody looks at you and then makes a call.

ID numbers do not reflect race anymore ... unless they lied !

I know it was done a long time ago, but I suspect that they might have changed it. It would be VERY discriminatory to still classify people on race when dishing out ID numbers.
