MTN SLOW DOWNLOAD SPEEDS

We live in the south of Joburg and have 3G/HSDPA connection with the aid of an external antenna.

Our download speeds are terrible according to Speedtest.net and our Server is located in Maputo, with ping of 735ms!

MTN seem to confuse "Coverage" with "Speed" because our reception (5 bands) is OK but what comes through this link is bits and bobs.

Why is it provided at times via CellC or Vodacom?

I would be grateful if someone could give me a technical explanation as to how this works

Try picking on of the speedtest servers in Johannesburg or Midrand.

The Joburg alternative Server, Altech Technology Concepts, is not available. Pingtest.net looks for the best server, and finds it in Maputo.

Why doesn't MTN have it's own Server in Joburg??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

You are not alone. I especially moved over to MTN from Vodacom due to the internet speed difference.

However of late, I have also noticed MAJOR dl and upload speeds drastically decrease to the point sometimes (mainly in the afternoon) that I cannot even browse on my phone.

I wander what is actually going on...

If you want to check your speed, use speedtest.net instead. You will find that MTN does in fact have a server for that service in JHB.

When I check my broadband connection using Pingtest.net, the first thing it does is look for the "best" internet server. This is usually found (1) in Maputo - TVCabo Mozambique, or (2) Altech Technology Concepts in Joburg, which seems to be blocked, (3) Vodacom in Pretoria, and (4) iSpace in Umhlanga, NONE from MTN Network Solutions!

This is usually found (1) in Maputo - TVCabo Mozambique, or (2) Altech Technology Concepts in Joburg, which seems to be blocked, (3) Vodacom in Pretoria, and (4) iSpace in Umhlanga, NONE from MTN Network Solutions!

The server that speedtest.net picks is supposed to be the best one, but they don't always get it right. Rather pick one manually.

and post their results?

If you would go ahead and read what I've written there for you, use SPEEDtest.net instead of PINGtest.net. You will find many more servers on speedtest (including an MTN one which I can confirm since I have used it many times). If it does not automatically select the nearest server, go ahead and do it yourself, if your knowledge of geography can manage it

Pingtest gives you an indication of the quality of your connection, not the speed and pingtest has much less servers than speedtest.
