What is the view of MTN in relation to the use of a persons own SMTP servers on their network?

Are you forced to use their servers only (like iBurst) or can you use your own?

You can use your own POP3 server (for incoming mail) but you must use MTN's SMTP server for outgoing mail. This is done to prevent spam originating from MTN's domain and IP addresses. It is common practice for ISPs to do this to prevent the bulk spammers around the world "hijacking" your domain to generate the spam that we all see every day.

There are 2 SMTP servers you can use. They are

mail.mtn.co.za
mail.mtnloaded.co.za

Thanks for the replies (even though they are conflicting).

MTNDD, below is an extract from MTN in regards this query as the client is currently using MTN's SMTP servers, but experiencing problems.

Hi ****,

Does this help?

"Our MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) is designed especially for subscribers who
can't make use of another MTA via their outlook client. Port 25 is open to
any MTA on the internet to whoever grants access and to an HTML based mail
system. So we don't force anyone to make use of the system.
A lot of subscribers are using our GPRS outgoing IP (default) to send mail
via their MTA's and subsequently these IP's are blocked by SPAM detection
hosts as a lot of virus and similar e-mail are outbound on those IP. Their
mail could get blocked by the destination server. Hence the reason for MTN
providing SPAM detection MTA"

Kind regards,

********

I use my own SMTP because MTN's blocks half my email. I have complained but this has fallen on deaf ears...

How did you get your SMTP server settings to work? When own settings are input, server times out.

I'll check at home - that's where the machine is that uses MTN. I am pretty sure it uses authentication on the SMTP though...

Sorry for late reply - only been active at home today:

I have overseas hostings (cheaper in the long run, more reliable). The server uses password authentication.

Server address: cp6.awardspace.com
(AwardSpace is my SP overseas)
Port: 25
(Perfectly standard)
Authentication: password
Username: [email protected]
Password: yeahright!
Apple mail has no time outs set but it seems to be about 60 seconds before it bails when it can't reach.
