I signed up for the R329 MTN uncapped lite service which came with the B683 router. This was a week or two ago and it's really starting to irritate me...

If I download a file from http I generally get 300KB/sec no problem and the download has never yet aborted...

Having said that, general browsing is a major issue. I would estimate that every 10 links I click on, my browser just gets stuck on "website found waiting for reply". If I have firebug open it reports back after a long time saying "Connection reset by peer".

This problem seems to happen when the connection bounces back and forth between HSPA, HSPA+, HSUPA and WCDMA. After much googling I have tried the continuous ping which doesn't work. There was mention of a HSPA locker app but this was on megaupload which is now gone. I've also tried keeping a ssh session open and a vpn connection but it still drops to WCDMA when there isn't a mass amount of data moving through the device.

Anyone else experiencing this or is it just the horrible towers in the Douglasdale area?

Serves you well by going with MTN. Next time read this forum before jumping in the boat :D In PE central and East London, MTN internet is the worst. The entire data network needs a upgrade asap. Count yourself lucky if you get 300KB/s downloading. You should have tried one of the newer data networks, like CellC or 8ta. Good luck.

I went with MTN as it was the only provider offering an uncapped service. I actually bought this in Jeffreys Bay while on holiday and had better connectivity there than here in Joburg.

I don't believe HSPA locker would help. It is normal if connection changes from HSPA+ to WCDMA (when idle). You get better picture if you observe CellID changing during connection. That would indicate forced handover and associated service interruptions Download MDMA.

While playing UO: Second Age online I would get really weird unplayable lag while it constantly switches between WCDMA and HSPA+. The pinging method did not work. What worked for me was to listen to a streaming radio station while playing the game. Weird, but it works. As soon as I stop the streaming radio station it would lag again. I usually just open up the 32Kbps AAC+ stream on RadioParadise.
I haven't had any issues with general browsing.
