It was reported 2 days ago that MTN is better with EDGE than Vodacom. I want to give the following feedback. a Test was conducted by me in Amersfoort Mphumalanga (small farming community). I could not get EDGE today with a MTN Fastlink Data Card E620. With my Vodacom K7315 modem I got EDGE with a download speed of 220KBPS (25Kilo bytes per sec). The MTN signal was to weak to conduct any tests. I agree Vodacom has problems and I'm talking out of exsperience but they are not as bad as mentioned in the Thread in the Vodacom section. ;)

I must say, MTN is going through some rough times at the moment. Their operations at all levels are crumbling. Vodacom is mediocre but MTN has completely lost the plot.

MTN with MTN Zone is so much better than vodacom! With MTN I almost all the times on weekends have 95% discounts to all networks.

Vodacom gives a MAX of 60%

Now why would some one want to pay so much extra for the exact same call? The price on MTN per call is almost half of what vodacom charges.

Vodacom can only compete with vodacom 2 vodacom call sometimes reaching 24c per min.
But MTN slams them and I get 12.5c per minute MTN to MTN and a mere 15c MTN to Other networks!

Do you think Vodacom can compete with MTN Zone! No way in this life time!

And since people use calling most I can sit with a few MTN Data hickups!

At this very moment I'm going to compare MTN to Vodacom. 29/08/09 08:00am to 09:00am cause discounts apply in a 1 hour intervale.

MTN:
95% discounts.
MTN to MTN 12.5c per minute [This will be 13c or if you talk 2min it will be 25c and not 26c]
MTN to Other 15c per minute
SMS's 1c per SMS [its less but MTN rounds to the nearest cent]

Vodacom:
Y4L 75% Voda and 60% Other
Vodacom 2 Vodacom 62.5c per minute
Vodacom 2 Others R1.20 per minute
Vodacom SMS 35c [Remeber vodacom y4l does not give discounts on SMS like MTN]

Its simple. Why in this lifetime Would I want to use vodacom?

Here is where I get this Figures:

Good morning:)

Amersfoort? Thats my area of Jurisdiction signal wise, reason you are not getting Edge is because there is only GPRS there, it will be upgraded- problem is that we are waiting for the txmn links to enable this, takes a while :(
Secondly, with a speed of 220kbps- considering the max speed on edge is 228kbps you must be one of very few voda data users there, no congestion!:D

MTN does have better coverage in some areas - as VODACOM has better coverage in other areas. Much of a muchness. But if something goes wrong with your billing - you will be more than happy to pay that little bit extra for a service provider who can provide reasonable service. (ie VODACOM) - MTN just stonewalls you at 808 and nobody ever phones you back "as promised" - and nobody updates the reference numbers on your call so WTF?!?!?! Besides 808 is not 2-24 hours behind live as advertised - it is up to 90 days out of date. So they tell you you got 1,8 gig left when you actually have 100 meg left - then charge you for going out of bundle when their 808 system tells you you are way within bundle. Surely that sort of False Advertising is illegal?

As I said before.
Imagine renting a car with 300km free per day and when handing it in they charge you for doing 500km per day as the car's odometer is faulty so they tracked you by satellite. Will you pay? Are you liable to pay?

The odometer MUST be in good working order. If not, you are not liable for the extra billing.

MTN. PLEASE FIX YOUR DATA COUNTER.

Fat chance. It's been 'broke' for weeks now and MTN gave up even responding to the related complaints ages back. Either they can't fix it, or they don't care. Take your choice!

Months now. Since April when they updated their system. Louis Nell from MTN finally acknowledged that they have a problem with billing since the inception of their new billing system.
I keep reversing my bank deduction and paying in my normal amount in cash.

Iv got both networks, MTN does really save on the calls side of life...wudnt comment on the data because none of them is better unless they give me value for my money which none of them give right now. Speed wise yeah maybe MTN does knock off a few KBPS than vodacom, but coverage and network loads on MTN put me off at times...all in all MTN and vodacom rock in their own way

I'm an MTN contract holder and investor, but this test was done after much frustration with what used to be decent data performance in Bloubergrant.

Test conducted on an MTN branded E270 only 2-3 minutes apart, so exact same location, exact same device, exact same speedtest server, almost exact same time (I had to switch SIMs obviously), Vodacom is pwning MTN in this particular test ... :(
