For any reps here, when is MTN going to start with wifi calling?
It's 2015, and even Cell C has it an option launching soon.

I've spoken to our planning department, they are not sure yet. I'm sure marketing has this on the cards though, just tight lipped at the moment.

Suspect that this will be something that will launch under the Afrihost banner.

more than 6 months later, and still nothing.

MTN, I'm done with you... as soon as my contract expires I'm moving. Luckily it is soon.

Help me understand the benefits of wifi calling please? Is it cheaper? Is call quality better (what if my wifi is hooked up to a 1Mb adsl line)?

No and no. There are only two use-cases: 1) you are in an area where you are connected to a wifi network that is stronger than the GSM network (e.g. deep inside a building); 2) you are overseas and can make international calls via wifi at your standard local rates (or with your regular free minutes).

I for example have 1 bar signal strength at home with Edge (I know terrible) but I have wi-fi so it doesn't really bother me, until I need to make a call, then it is a major struggle. With Wi-Fi calling I will be able to make a call over my Wi-Fi. Now I know it sounds like a whatsapp call or FaceTime audio but... I can also call landlines this way and family that doesn't have whatsapp.

When I travel, I can call home using my MTN minutes without paying roaming charges.

Thanks for the explanation - makes sense.

The way Cell C were promoting it, sounded like then next best thing, when in fact its actually compensating for their lousy network.

The use case where you are overseas and can use it to make calls at SA rates is very promising.

It is actually the next big thing. In first world countries they even allow you do to unlimited calls while on wifi calling, without deducting from your bundle.

Not here though. You pay for the call out of bundle or rate, plus the data cost if it's your own wifi - so just saving money for the local operators.
