MTN's big bandwidth plans

MTN

And now MTN is struggling with keeping their GPRS online in the evenings, how much more will they not struggle...

ok, so neotel is partnering with seacom, and MTN with EASSy. where does that leave vodacom and Telkom?

AFAIK, MTN is a partner on the EASSy cable. No idea about Neotel. I know they have something in the SEACOM cable :o

I might be wrong though

I'm serious...

MTN and neotel will have loads of bandwidth... is Vodacom planning on building their own network alone or something?

Yes, not sure about alone, but they definitely are laying cable.

They have both Acquired capacity on the SEACOM cable

Oh, i thought the neo people were the only ones....

so what's the big deal then if everyone will have all the new capacity?
not really a chance of anyone of them going out and making it cheaper because the other one CAN'T - they know if they do, the competition will do it as well, because they CAN.

not good at all (Competition wise) - hopefully some will start decreasing prices anyway, and let the rest follow as well.

The relief comes in the form of Seacom's cost per MB. The competition will be to see who can sell closest to the minimum cost. That cost per MB is waaaay lower than SAT3's cost per MB.

I have 4 phones. 1 on contract and the rest on PayG
All MTN. Yeah I've been a bit of a fanboi. The contract phone has, let's be polite, intermittent service at best after 7pm. the payG phones.. Let's not even go there. And this is not in some dorpie in the outback. This is at work in PTA central. A block away from Telkom Towers. Now I can imagine what rural people has to go through... Now they come with all these lovely projections when they can't even handle their current load?

last night I insert a smurf sim into one of the phones. Do quick wap setup and voila. Connected. Fast too. Guess where I'm going when it's time to upgrade that ProCall contract? And screw you, taking my number with me.

Thank goodness they were prohibited to lock our contract phones. ;)

It was going to be impossible to block sims in the near future anyway. Since phones are becoming more software oriented. People would simply unblock their devices at home.

Its stil funny how vodacom disabled the edge feature on their cellphones some time ago when they couldnt provide edge signals, to ensure their customers wouldn't be tempted to join MTN. They will always find a way to lock clients in.
