MTN's costly cheapies?

Bought an MTN cheapie cell, and refused to buy airtime as I use cellC.

Yea, I think this need to be looked at - consumer's having the SIM and airtime forced upon him.

This is just another way to get locked into high GSM mobile prices, regardless of the carrier. In India, Nigeria, and several other developing countries, the way to get lower cost services is to migrate to a CDMA carrier, which typically charges substantially less than the GSM fatcats, since the underlying network is much more efficient.

Would think the MTN deal includes starter - there is a cheaper Voda starter for R149 - a lot of people have wised up to the bundling bunny, does not make it right - as said before, if you want to bridge the gap and talk the empowerment talk, then walk the walk and have phones that can do Opera Mini and drop data prices - otherwise the must shut up

Topup 135 is what im on.. U can add an sms bundle to it if needed.

You pay like R135 (come to more than that with all the little extras) a month and u get 135 airtime.... Once u run out u can top up with a normal voucher.. It just saves you having to reload airtime so often..

Talk120 (voda)

Which shops do offer top-up contracts?

Prepaid FTW!!! :D

Any shop that offers normal contracts will have top ups too:D.

I've got a Moto Rokr on Top Up 135S [Vodacom] for R144.50 a month and you get R135 air time per month. Calls are billed per second on this contract:). You can top up your account with prepaid vouchers at any time.

You are effectively getting a R2000+ phone for R9.50 x 24 = R228:cool:.

Will have a look if CellC can offer the same.

Don't want to lose my CellC number.

Thanks!

The article is aimed at MTN referring to the Cost of the device and Airtime, however in the article it says that Vodacom phones are on sale for R 49.00 but then you're forced to buy R 199.00 starter pack.

Why then is the Article made out be aimed at MTN

Shouldn't the heading have been Costly cheapies instead of MTN costly cheapies ?

Is there genuine empowerment in offering a cheap phone when the recipient has to spend on the instrument and airtime?

MTN's cheapies go on sale from R200 to R600.

Vodacom also have cheapies currently on sale from as low as R49 for some makes, but the catch is that consumers must buy a prepaid sim card for R199, which has R25 airtime.

It is absurd that the airtime and sim card are cheaper than the instrument. A sim card without airtime is sold from 59c to R1.99

But the Heading says MTN costly cheapies ?

Can someone clarify this for me ?

Article came about because of MTN's announcement below:

MTN said on Monday it had introduced low-cost cellphones with multi-functional features to meet the needs of mass and emerging market consumers.

They claim the cheaper cellphones will empower those who were previously excluded from the cellular market due to affordability and access.

Vodacom may also be selling cheap phones but there was no public announcement from their side about "empowering the nation".

I agree with your confusion. The prices look much the same to me. Maybe Vodacom bought this Naidu chap a nice expensive cellphone!

Just port it if you have too [could be serious hair pulling though:D]. Cell C's is called Control Chat [I think].

Yeah, Cell C's is called Control Chat - I was on one, before I ported to Autopage as an SP; had to take a full contract then :(. As for the Control Chat, it's even better than VC because they offer R145 airtime for R125 per month. Plus, on the whole ControlChat range, you can go as low as R75 airtime for R50 per month  Schweet :D

But the pricing is the same more or less. And if so (because of the announcement), why link Vodacom to the article at all ?
