I'm so close to getting my Live connection going. Network card, IP config & DNS tests all pass. My MTU test fails :(

I have Xbox360 > Linksys Router/switch > PC 2 > PC1.

PC1 has the 3G connection/modem which is shared with PC2.

The Linksys router is a WAG300N. It is a switch, router, wireless AP, ADSL modem in one. However I don't use the ADSL part & my config on the modem is set to bridged. The config screen HAS no MTU setting & it appears there's no way for me to change it on the router!!

I can download a program to change MTU - but do I change the MTU on PC1 (shared) or PC2 (internet)? Will the Linksys override whatever setting I do with its default setting?

PC2 wil probably be the best option. Set your MTU to 1364 so that you pass the MTU test.

I'm not too clued up on ICS tho ...

Eish...difficult technical stuff. I'm assuming that this Live test you're flunking is related to the XBox. And the XBox gets its intarwebz from PC1?

If that is the case then you'd have to change it on PC1...but if you're using Vista then the MTU is auto-adjusted so you'd have to switch that off first.

I'm thinking the 3G card will also split packets somehow...so that could also be causing the test to flunk. DO you know anyone running Live off 3G successfully?

Are you bridging the network connection over PC2 with two network cards? Thats what the diagram looks like. Or are both connected to the router?

No

The general idea with MTU is to get the biggest value that doesn't cause packet fragmentation.

I think the minimum it needs to be is 1450 or something.

Yup ....

Not using Vista - so I guess it's PC1. I'll try it when I get home :) but why PC1? Only a guess - but surely you'd change it on the PC where the modem and initial internet connection is?

I actually ran it correctly off this configuration (3G) at one stage ;) A friend (timgaul) came over and fixed everything for me & bridged connections etc. I decided to touch it a few weeks later and - well - broke it. I've tried to fix it again without calling him and I'm so, so close!

Not bridged ... dunno what it means or how to do it :/ This is the diagram http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php/photo/3195/size/big/cat//ppuser/7981 PC1 is downstairs and PC2 is upstairs. Hope this helps!

PC2 connected to router via wireless ... PC1 and Xbox360 connected via ethernet to the switch. I'm thinking setting it on PC1 may actually make it pass this test!

I said 1364, as that is the setting I have on my router and I don't get dropped often (using the wireless adapter).

I hope you come right dude ...

I've had MTU issues before, just try a few settings between 1350 and 1500, increments of 10 are usually fine enough. Go for the biggest you can.
