Much needed advice..

Good morning. Tnx fir your response. Pls. I would appreciate all the advice I can get...Have a nice day...
Ok, first thing you can do is to stop automatic updates in settings, because some apps do updates sometimes daily. Set it to first ask for permission to update or only update when wifi is available.
You can also stop all wasp services that sneaked through on your phone. Each carrier has its own codes for that.
Then in settings in the data usage section you can go through each app listed and look at the bottom where it shows a background activity box. Tick or untick as you see best. Daily apps should best be allowed performing background activities, like browsers, but some are a real pain in the butt and slows down your phone a lot. I even bar Google Play Store and only untick it temporarily if i want to do app downloads, but if you want to be rather careful leave them be.

For unauthorised Vodacom WASP services send an sms with the words STOP ALL to 31050. You may get a list of WASP services you probably didn't know of.

For Cell C:

Use the USSD string *133*1#

MTN

MTN has four separate USSD strings to manage premium content subscriptions, each of which needs to be accessed for a user to check if they are subscribed to any WASPs.

These USSD strings are:

*136*5#
*464*970#
*156*12#
*123*10#
Users can block premium-rated services such as WASPs by following the steps below:

Dial *136*5#
Select option 2 (Content Services)
Select option 2 (Manage Premium Rated Services)
Select option 2 (PRS Charges)
Select option 1 (Block PRS Charges)

Telkom

Telkom allows you to block all WASP subscriptions by enabling a setting in the Telkom app.

Log into the app and navigate to My Products > Manage > Protect Your Mobile Number, and set it to “On”.

To manage premium contentu subscriptions, navigate to My Products > Subscriptions > Content Services.

To save costs you can buy the far cheaper night owl or similar data bundles, which can be used at midnight hours if you can stay awake one night. I usually mark or keep big downloads and download them with these night hour bundles whenever I can stay awake for one night. Then you save the usual data bundles for normal daily usage.

If you going through data just for reading you should install ublock origin on your web broswer, saves a ton of data.

Also disable windows updates. Open the start menu -> type services -> look for windows update -> right click and select properties -> change startup type to disabled.

This does not work on newer windows 10 versions, it just enable it self after a few reboots :(
Think the local group policy trick still works and stays disabled.

a. You not sure what to do.
=>Get the fibre installed and we can move forward.
Nothing is better than a reliable cable.
If you do not install fibre we will run in circles here. Once the fibre is installed only use prepaid on mobiles when you travel.

b. Re Wifi and upgrades. See point a above. Install the fibre. Avoid all other services if you can help it.

c. Reading.
As the saying goes, the best things in live are free.
Reading/ text is cheap.
Examples. The entire HAT on my machine is 15MB.
Origins of species is 0.5MB.
These are not eating your data allowance, something else is.

d. E-Book reader.
These fall into the same category as jewellery, a very private affair. Each person will have different preferences.
I would think buy a tablet, install the kindle app or other ebook reader app and read on tablet.
Tablets can be used for many other things.

e. Where to obtain ebooks.
Totally depends on what you want to read.
A ubiquitous question at this time.

Good day guys.

I need to make a decicion now to install Fibre.
This is a deal from Vodacom. I am already a client with them, but from my previous posting here We are still battling. But I believe with Fibre it is totally different. Am I right???
I don't want to sign up again and then sit with the same NON EXSISTANT SIGNALS again.... I am not clued up with these kinds of things and want to make sure I am not taken for a ride. We are 2/3 people, mostly home use, maybe a couple of movie downloads. My budget is around R600. Tnx.

FROM. VODACOM..

Hey Lia83. Did you manage to get any advice? My cell service in durban can sometimes be a pain especially during load shedding. We've opted to move over to Afrihost with an LTE router. It's better most of the time. I use the SIM in my Mi-Fi LTE router when load shedding hits. If all else fails I save pages for offline reading and can still read on my phone. Use Google Play Books since you're on Android and you can zoom in for font size. But if you do a google search you'll come across free books online. I enjoy reading short articles. Blogs mainly and find some cool information on mobile blogs as I'm also not too clued up on these. Try this blog for some useful information, I found this cool one on load shedding. Another thing is using a web browser like Opera Mini, extremely outdated but still in use and doesn't take much data when reading online

Hi. Thank u. Yes. Do read on Google Play books if and when I can. Have Had such bad and non existing signal from MTN this last month or 2. :sick:After reporting and logging a complaint 2 weeks ago, I were informed one of our 2 towers had major problems. But they either could not or would not tell me which tower closest to my house it was and that they were working on fixing it, to which I told them to work harder. Miraculously last week I had decent reception again. Loads of emails came through all at once. I could receive calls again, I could access the Internet relatively easier and I could send out emails :D
Hopefully soon enough I will go the Fibre route. Tnx for responding....

Middag almal. Ek hoop en vertrou dit gaan goed met eljeen. Eindelik installeer hulle more middag my Fibre. Ek het n kontrak deur Supersonic gekry. Vuma het laat weet ek moet n Ethernet (lan) cable gereed he.. Die Fibre buite my huis is naaste aan my slaapkamer as my Sitkamer afstand gewys vanaf buite. !!! Asseblief, raad sal BAIE waardeer word en julle opinies en insette is baie waardevol. Baie dankie. Groete en veilig wees...

The short version.
Wait, let the fibre be installed.
Tell us what devices /products were provided (we need model numbers, see at back of devices):
1. CPE device and what
2. PPPoE device was provided.

Longer version
Nearly all configurations will be {I guess yours will look like:
1. "Fibre Terminates in this 'CPE' Fibre termination box": {A small router like box, will probably be a huawei device, property of fibre cable owner}

2. "PPPoE device": An example of a good device is a Mikrotik hap AC.
Rather than the good option above, ISPs usually provide a cheap option like say a Tenda f300.
This device will do NAT.
It will probably also be a Wifi Access point
=> What product will your ISP provide?

3. Connecting 1 and 2 : Ether net cable/ CAT 5/ CAT6 UTP cable 0.5 to +- 3 meter meter. Example cable.
Cable is like a pencil in world of writing, you can find it nearly anywhere. You rill probably find one included in the box of device 2. above. If not, buy one at say GAME. Let us know if you fail to get one with devices.

Ensure you have at least say 3 of these cables at all times available moving forward. We always use cables for testing. If the dog chew through the cable you need a replacement nearby.

4. Wifi, all your client devices likes laptops, phones and TVs will probably use wifi to link to to device 2.
Where possible always link devices with cable as shown in point 3. You can use ether net cable / UTP for distances <= 100m.

Glad your fibre was installed.

Now you can drop the expensive GSM subscriptions with Vodacom/ MTN/ etc.

Pay close attention to the "device 1: CPE device", ensure you know what lights are lit whilst the service work as expected, this so you can easily determine if no internet at a future date is due to:
a. Fibre being down due to whatever reason.

You will probably have most issues; when you have issues; with "device 2: PPPoE device: Zyxel router".
Same here, ensure you know what lights are lit whilst the service work as expected, this so you can easily detect what is at fault at a future date.
