Mugabe gets top AU position

Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe new African Union chairman

African leaders have appointed Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe as the new chairman of the 54-nation African Union.

The 90-year-old Mugabe, who has ruled his country since 1980, succeeds Mauritania's President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.

The announcement was made during the African Union's two-day heads of state summit at the organization's headquarters in Ethiopia's capital.

Traditionally, the chairmanship is given to the leader of the country hosting the next summit, but exceptions have been made like in 2005 when it was the turn of Sudan's Omar al-Bashir but African leaders bowed to outside pressures in the uproar over killings in Darfur. They passed over al-Bashir and instead kept Nigeria's Olusegun Obasanjo for a second year.

If you ever wanted evidence that the AU was a mickey-mouse organisation, now you have it.

Only in Africa. What a humanitarian travesty and a sad indictment to humanity. Goes to show that there are no difference between this mad despot Mugabe and the other African leaders.

What you have is Zeus and his council of demigods lavishing in luxury high up where the air is thin.

And then there's everyone else far down below, fighting for the scraps the overlords toss out.

But I gotta say, it's nice albeit some schadenfreude to see US and EU and even our own lefty activists' faces. Africans want this sort of thing. Maybe the SJWs and other agitators and activists need to lead a pacifist children's crusade into Africa to get their butts kicked and sent home crying to their iPhones and stick to interfering with peoples' lives in the 1st World - that most oppressive of places.

Elected leaders in Africa see Mugabe as a great son. Like it or not. It's their choice.

What is the reason?

Look at Cyril Ramaphosa.

Does he dance around a campfire every fortnight dressed in in leopard skins while consuming grain beer?

There's your answer.

But I see you've already seen the light.

.

It may be their choice but it puts them in an even more ridiculous light than they often find themselves in.

Yes, Apartheid is not the reason why Africa is considered to be the 3d world.

There's a much more endemic reason.

Not being allied with the US and UK, or USSR was what made you part of the third world. The whole model was based on the cold war.
