Say goodbye to MultiChoice as you know it

MultiChoice has begun a significant restructuring as the DStv owner starts to execute several transactions to facilitate French media giant Group Canal+’s acquisition of the company.

Canal+ was compelled to make an offer to acquire MultiChoice after it exceeded the 35% shareholding threshold in the South African Companies Act.

MultiChoice has assured that there will be no disruption for its viewers in South Africa. In addition, Canal+ promised more content and technology investment over time.

“This transaction is an opportunity to create a unique global media company with a strong presence across Africa,” said Maxime Saada, the CEO of Canal+.

“It will have the scale, expertise and creativity to compete and partner with the largest players within the media sector and beyond.”

As the article says, content wise it's business as usual.

Most of the chances are cost savings by integrating the two companies. Look at a map showing where each one operates!

For 99.999% of South Africans nothing changed with the takeover. Most people don't own shares. If you own shares, you either had no Multichoice or only a small fraction of your portfolio.

If it was a big part of your portfolio, you probably don't read MyBroadband.

So the headline is clickbait.

No, a bit more than that - first bit of confirmed news re a better future for subscribers again. Current management has been messing it up badly for years now.

Off topic: Are you still farming in Georgia? Any political improvement with that?

Yes, I'm based in Tbilisi, Georgia. But no, I never farmed.

I'm not laying down deep roots here, so I'm unaffected by the political situation. I have a few plan Bs like Uruguay

With their clout it would make it easier to negotiate better deals so content may improve a little. Also I doubt they're going to be content with how MC is bleeding premium customers so perhaps better packages at better prices over time.

So no change for the consumers then. Looks like I will still have to find creative ways of watching rugby.

So still advertising interrupted sporadically by 5 minutes of content?

Lol

But actually that has changed quite a bit over the months / last couple of years, depends on the channel.
What you see now is a lot more self-promotion, to fill the gaps.

On some less seen channels like the now-exclusive terrestrial version of M-Net and its partner CSN sport channel, there's often no commercial ads at all.... And on other African countries' sports channels there's usually far less ads. Sign of the times

Talks about restructuring packages and sport only packages only started flaring up again with the Canal+ deal. Perhaps a sign.

Looks that way. But this latest statement suggests they're not in a rush.
