Multichoice talks rand weakness

CEO at DStv Digital Media, John Kotsaftis, said that the local currency “is a big problem for us”, to the point where it affects how the group conducts its business

Consumers also are affected, SA buys Oil in $$ for Petrol, we just have to live with it, question is how will Multichoice now deal with it.

I see a price hike incoming, perhaps I'll save some of my Rands by avoiding the price hike and cancelling our dstv subscription

R750-R800?

But just you wait till the end strengthens in 18 months. The they'll blame inflation nd raise it again.

Maybe they mean that with the weak Rand people are canceling so that affects them indirectly.

Or they need salary increases to pay for those luxurious holidays in the USA?

Nah they just retrench people to have those.

I bet they are losing subscribers to services like Netflix and Hulu, but in their infinite ignorance they attribute it to exchange rates instead of their bad offerings.

It's not necessarily a bad offering, just a very expensive one for what it is...

Kind of hard to believe they're having a bad time when you see the 'mini city' they're busy building in Randburg...

Netflix is rubbish. Rarely get new content. They still list Breaking Bad as a "recent release"

If you are new to Netflix in about 6 months you will be done with it.

Some people have jobs and sleep for a few hours at night ;)

Been DSTV free since Nov 2012.
Netflix used almost every night and not over it yet.

It all depends what you're into. The wife and I enjoy documentaries and history channel kind of stuff, and UK Netflix has plenty of that.

He said that with the current weakness, the group may look to drop channels, albeit marginal ones.
There are many channels that should have been paying to be carried or been dropped long ago instead of DSTV claiming that they add value to their offering.

... not my problem though, we've been DSTV free for over two years now :)
