MultiChoice welcomes competition from Netflix

Just wait, Multichoice will start pricing their packages in US$ soon to fall in line with the competition

DStv ‘Premium’ package which costs R699 per month
Ouch - expensive for just SuperSport.
This should motivate lots of subscribers to cancel and move to Netflix.

Can't help feel that the next Multichoice step will be to make Showtime free to Premium subscribers in order to slow down subscriber churn due to Showtime and Netflix.

I know this might be a shock, Multichoice, but you're the ones trying to compete against THEM. I agree that right now infrastructure-wise Multichoice has a headstart, but as far as actual resources and size there is absolutely zero comparison.

Its quite easy, if Monochoiche want's to kill Netflix in the local market offer sport on Showmax....

lol, riiight!

Why would you say it's not?

This is great for Multichoice. They have the monopoly on sport and some series, so bringing Netflix to the table means more interest on VoD - which means more interest in ShowMax.

Now all they need to do is offer live sport on ShowMax, then they'll make a killing.

Que the obligatory Mulichoice hate spewed from people that think that 1 million ADSL lines beats 5 million DSTV subscribers.

Well, Multichice's SA profit is not exactly stellar, is it? If only a quarter of that ADSL subscribes go the Netflix way and only a quarter of that quarter had Dstv and decide to cancel, that will hurt. Will hurt big time. It will put Dstv SA into a solid red. That in turn, will have a negative effect on the investors and creditors which will turn the screw even tighter! Like it or not.

You're forgetting the mobile data guys, wireless, 3G, LTE, Satellite etc

Plus - Its only a matter of time for one of the major mobile carriers to zero rate VOD (I know Telkom does it now with Showmax on DSL)

http://www.telkom.co.za/today/shop/home/plan/smarthome-premium/

A best-value combination of superfast internet, data and talk-time for a constantly connected home.
50 GB at up to 10Mbps
Free Night Surfer data (12am - 7am)

SIM with 150 mobile minutes
Apple TV and Apple iPhone 4s
Free data to selected social network and entertainment URLs
Microsoft® Office 365 for 12 months

AFAIK that entertainment URL statement refers to showmax.... but hey, perhaps a telkom dude should verify.

Ok, i have done some more digging, it does not seem Showmax is Zero Rated on Telkom.... My bad... I should confirm before posting.... sorry uncle MODs.

But anyway, VOD is going to get easier to access and use, its only a matter of time.
