Hi

I have used the Vox bolt-on account for the last few months and works well for me (nobody home during the day). Recently started streaming Netflix and there are some times outside of the bolt-on time that we want to watch. So I got a small capped account from Afrihost (yeah I know but in my area it seems they don't have issues from my limited testing, and I don't need more midnight data). So I set up the Afrihost details on the router thinking I will switch over to Vox on weekends (Netgear DGN2200 takes a long time to change details...).

Anyhow, I tested creating a new PPPOE session from my PC with different ISP details and luckily it works (checked IP and ISP on speedtest and routing with pingplotter). Now my question, if I create the connection to Vox account from my PC to do downloads during the night, and the router is still set on Afrihost account, is it possible for the PC to lose connection to Vox and then carry on downloading on Afrihost account? This will put a big dent in my cap.

Thanks

yes the pppoe connection on the PC will be the default and override the your gateway on said pc.

However, to answer the OP's question, yes, if the Vox connection drops for some reason, your PC will fall back to downloading via its default route, which is the Netgear with the Afrihost PPPoE session active, and will kill your cap.

Set the default gateway on your PC to be something other than your router, or delete the default gateway, before you establish the vox connection. Then if the vox connection drops, your PC can't see the internet.

Just a question. I assign an IP address to my PC with the default gateway set as the router IP. Then my PC can connect to the router, but not to the internet. Any ideas?

Have you set your DNS?

What i did for something similar is. I have a TP-Link TD-W8980 Modem. I have 7 PPPOE connections on this device (All can connect at once). I then use the uncapped one to download my "Linux Distros", 1 Huge capped account for normal browsing/Downloading and then all the other accounts i just put there because I have them all (free 1GB, 3GB accounts). This is all done on this 1 specific router. No Add-ons at all. And it works Brilliantly. Don't have to change anything just initial setup.

This is so weird. Did the same thing now again and now its working.

Router set up with Afrihost account, then I change PC IP and leave out the default gateway. The I dial a PPPOE session to my VOX account and the PC can connect to the internet. When I disconnect the Vox account I cannot access the internet anymore, which is what I wanted. I did not set up a DNS server on the PC, don't know if that is necessary?

Thanks for the help.

Essentially, what you need to do is delete your default route before starting up your vox account, and put it back one your download is complete.

Keep in mind that if your Windows PPPoE connection drops, Windows will automatically try and redial it again.
So you are pretty safe in that sense. If you are unable to redial the connection, chances are the Afrihost account isn't dialed up on the router anymore either (perhaps due to your line resyncing or similar). :D
