Hi there

We are running a commune and have three users who want to share an ADSL line through one connection. Since the rest of the commune that use the ADSL for email and an occassional youtube video don't want to pay for the XBOX360 user's downloads etc., we'd like to set up a way where we can split each 1GB of bandwidth between the three users on a, say, 3/3/4 ratio - is there some software out there that can do this? Do we need to set up a separate box as a proxy? If so, which software would you recommend to achieve this?

Thanks in advance.

Why not get seperate pre-paid webafrica accounts? that way each person pays for the usage on their accounts.

Separate webafrica accounts through one router? I don't know of any way that that would work? We need a way where three people (of varying skill levels, but none tech-savvy) can use the same single Telkom line, and single ADSL router but have their bandwidth controlled. The only way I see it working with 3 * Webafrica accounts is that each person will need to configure the router to log into their account whenever they use it - but there may be a time when all three use the line simultaneously...

They can put the router into bridge mode and dial-up from each pc using RASPPPOE on to different accounts. Give us your router info, OS's and such and we will give you a hand.

RASPPPoE is only necessary when you have Windows 2000/XP and you want to dial more than 2 PPPoE connections at the same time from that PC.

Separate accounts:
What the previous users suggested would be the easiest: by putting your router in bridging mode and then to let all the users dial their own pre-paid accounts. I'm just not sure what you're going to do with your XBOX though, because I don't think it can dial a PPPoE connection?

Also, with most ISP accounts, you can dial up to 4 connections on the same account. For instance when you have 2 PC's you only need 1 account, since you can dial a connection to the same account on both PCs.

If the XBOX can't dial its own connection, you would have to setup your router in half-bridge mode such that the router can dial the account for the XBOX. Alternatively, setup ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on your PC, so that your XBOX can share your PC's network/Internet connection. Your PC doesn't require 2 network cards for ICS to work. You just need 2 network interfaces (1 being the LAN adapter and the other being the PPPoE connection that you're dialing).

Alternatively:
You could install NetLimiter 2 monitor (which is free) on all the PC's and that way you could monitor both the Internet and local network traffic usage and share 1 account. I guess you would have to setup ICS on one PC so that you can monitor your XBOX traffic usage too.

When I said 'we', I meant Pada :p
Rock-solid advice, OP would do well to heed it. (And look how neat and well set out it is  , you're making the rest of us look bad)

use the Wireless User Group Of Pretoria...

They are building a new Mini Internet :D (they support xbox now I think) <--- its not connected to the internet. Its becoming a large community based Network. Mostly gamers

If you're not close to Pretoria. Go to Wug.Za.Net and try a wug nearest to you.
