For the last several years, a Mount Fuji of evidence has piled up to show that multivitamins don’t do much of anything for the health of the average person. Though less conclusive, a growing body of evidence suggests that they may even shorten your life. Unless you are taking vitamins to address a specific deficiency, malnutrition or illness, gulping down a multivitamin in hopes of preventing disease or cheating the Grim Reaper may be one of the most prevalent medical myths of our time.

Ockie has polony for breakfast, sausage for lunch and wors for supper.

With mayonnaise?

Loads of mayonnaise! :D

Pretty much this yes. :D

Seriously though . I am a big meat and starch eater. Red meat be it rump or wors etc. Potatos .... yummmy. Eggs and bread....SLURP!. Noodles and tuna. :D

I do eat onion and tomatoes though. Sure that has got plenty goodness in them.

But ja. .... I know my diet is not very healthy ... that is why I supplement. Does not make it healthy I realise that ... but at least it will prevent there being a serious shortage of something.

I am slowly trying to introduce veggies though .... but to get it down it has to be swallowed with copious amounts of melted cheese and mayo. Kind of defeats the purpose I am sure. :p

Oh and I eat lots of brown bread and weetbix

Buy the cheapest multivitamin if your diet is bad it will do the job.

If you deficient in a certain vitamin/mineral then add that specifically to your multivitamin. Dont buy everything you see on the dischem shelf you wasting your money

Does anyone here take multivitamins? Thinking of starting to take them - but would I just be creating expensive urine?
Depends. The bright yellow is just B2. The other vitamins are colourless so no way to tell. Even if you're creating expensive urine you might still need them and your body will get rid of extra amounts and even the amount you require over time so that is not an accurate measure.

The general ones like Centrum are useless though. If you are deficient you need therapeutic amounts and these contain mostly fillings. Stay away from Vitamin A though unless it's beta-carotene or you know you really need it.

Also just because it says it's a multivitamin and contains 26 different types or whatever does not mean your body can absorb them properly, resulting in you creating expensive pee.
Does not compute.

 Besides Vitamin D and Vitamin K, your body does not produce any vitamins.
You can actually synthesise some of them from other sources. That doesn't make the statement valid though. The old designation of vitamin is losing favour and shifting towards essential and non-essential nutrients instead. The non-essential ones your body can make but for some of them it's very expensive thereby depleting the essential ones so it is still good to get them from external sources and you won't lose the ability to make them.

not accurate.

the entire B complex will change colour with over supplementation
Vitamin C will cause colour change
very high levels of calcium will cause a colour change .... makes blue pee

Does not compute.

What he is saying is possible interactions that will impede delivery of vitamins/minerals

Not entirely accurate either. Vitamins are not completely colourless but for all practical purposes they are. Massive quantities will be visible but it's almost certain nobody is taking that. If there's a noticeable colour change it's safe to say it's B2.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can cause a change of colour. Works for dye removal. Calcium was never a topic.

I'm guessing you're not really reading it.

I scheme that it is better to take things like FoodState, Bio Strath or Spirolina, Chlorella (or both combined). They say that the body was not designed to absorb vitamins in the "artificial" state they are in with your normal mulitvitamins. It is much better absorbed when in a whole food state such as the products mentioned.

What do you guys think?

The company that makes the FoodState vitamins for example. I actually recall they had a study done that proved this to be true. I will have to google and see if I can find it. There was a legal case where another company tried to sue them saying that it is not true etc etc ... the court found in favour of the study saying that the vitamins are indeed better absorbed if taken in this form.

This is from their website:

Legal case:

Sorry... blocked on my work pc ..... so cant actually read the articles now.
