Municipal water backup recommendations

How much did the 3 stage filter system cost you?
R4k from the installer. It's this one...

Yes, if I were to re-do my installation I would get one of those Dab Esybox units.

Been keeping an eye on lag and pressure. So far it works exactly as it did on muni supply. No lag (despite having to travel through about 30m of piping to get to the house, and pressure is also as it used to be.

Have no idea how any of it works, guy said the pump has a built-in thingamajig that continuously monitors the pressure. As soon as it drops, the pump kicks in...

Paving is a mess because we couldn't mount the filters against the neighbour's precast wall, so we had to dig up the paving to run the pipes underneath.

1 - main input feed
2 - goes to the tank
3 - non-return valve
4 - to the pump
5 - to the filters

If there's an issue with the pump, turn off 2 & 4, municipal water still gets filtered.

Yes yes I know, black pipes. It's fine for now, if needed then I'll replace them with something better...
Nice. Looks really tidy. Mine looks like a DIY job, which it is. Real fscking messy.

So do you flip a valve when muni is off and then turn on the pump? Or will the pump be feeding the house constantly?
The latter does not make sense to me and I prefer to be in control. Also, I have excellent muni water pressure.
So would rather use that till it has dropped enough to warrant the startup of the pump and sucking from the tanks.

I can use municipal and flip a switch, but running everything on the pump for now. The only reason is to keep the water in the tank circulating, because I know I'm going to forget...

Got a quote from an installer, and it seems very very out of sync with that it should be.

I paid for a Jojo and the pump, and they quoted me 35K to install everything (it will need a concrete block for levelling)

This seems....far too much?

thats way too much - unless it is being installed 40m from the house and will need extra piping and electrical cabling

Way too much, I paid R29k including the pump and tank (which itself was R5k more due to being a slimline). Total cost would have been R24k if I went with a normal tank. They even had to buy extra piping which they didn't charge for...

It's quite close to the main line, so there is really no other piping needed or obscure set up besides some leveling and the installing a "support" beam for the pipe.

Really does feel like getting taken for a Eskom Se Push

I do know they charge a bit of a premium because they are well regarded, but hell, I did not think they would come it at that price

I was thinking max would be approximately 20K to install considering I bought the pump and standard jojo.

Getting other quotes to see if this first dude was chancing

It's like solar installers, some will chance it as people do pay

Got another quote and it's more in the ballpark of what I figured it would be (14K) to install.

Really have no clue where 34K came from or how it is justified.

The line I want to tap into (where the pipe from the JoJo tank connects to the house) is a galvanized pipe.

How do I connect a uPVC pipe to it? I know I’ll need a T-piece, but which type is suitable for this situation?

So much useful information in this thread and with the current water situation it's very relevant 👏👏

Some questions have already been asked and answered in the other thread

....................but .............

I'm getting quotes on a water storage system and have decided on a 1000l tank as I'm only one person  so my usage isn't high.

The first company has recommended a Zilmet VSD pump and some sort of string? wire? instead of the ball valve that's normally on geysers.

How do you guys feel about Zilmet VSD pumps? If DAB really is the only way to go I can stretch to paying for one but have no need to monitor usage, power, status or anything.

Another question I see plenty of people complaining about the noise pumps make but I don't understand that problem as I imagined they only run when you use water so there would be no sound most of the time anyway.

It depends on your preference. I have a 1.1kwh warthog pump. Its not a vsd. The majority of the time the house is run on the solar and batteries. I have it plumbed so i can choose whether to run it as a run through or solely on the tank. Have it mostly on the backup setup. I chose not to spend the 3k difference on the vsd and its been fine. The pump registers around 800w when its on. House is double storey. I have a ball valve and its been fine. Stops the inlet water when the tanks full, think that's its sole purpose really.

Edit I have the pump set to 3.5bar, and the pressure upstairs feels the same.

They do make some noise.

Are you planning on running your house off the tank full time or is it a reserve for when there are problems with the municipal supply?

On a 1000l and a single person you'll be wasting money on a very expensive pump and you could if a flat house (single story) you could go down to a .450/550/650kw pump. I'd go .75kw std pump as I do as I have a solar rooftop geyser on a std house. (not double story).

The 0.75kW pump that I have sounds like a pool pump. The 0.5 kW has a higher pitched sound. Noise is a non-thing, no idea why people are complaining about that of all things. If you can't hear a pool pump from inside then you won't hear this...

Yup, the noise from the 1.1kw minimal as well.
