Murdered Matie 'trying to help'

What are they doing outside at 3am?

Put a fishing hook on the other kid and reel her in.

Sadly its dangerous to be outside at 3am in this country, its not like that everywhere though. I would also drag my other kid out kicking and screaming if I had to.

You guys obviously don't know Stellenbosch that well, Kyamandi is the township area. Why on earth they would have been walking in those streets at 3am is the mystery. Students walking around the club areas and back to their res's would be more normal even at 3am, but not this.

Maybe he was walking his GF home? We don't know her name so for all possible reasons she could have been black and lived in the township?

They might have went to go buy some weed perhaps in the township?

Most people in Stellenbosch used to buy their weed either on campus or in Cloetesville (Coloured neighbourhood), not Kayamandi. Or so I've heard.

For all we know, the girl might be from the township or...there's many possibilities. I commend him for trying to fight the evil (unfortunately he paid with his life)

May his soul rest in piece.

Ye this is the only other possibility I've thought of so far. They should still know not to walk around there at 3am though, and he'd have to walk back into Stellenbosch alone..

We wouldn't walk in Kayamandi at that time 15 years ago...never mind today. Very sad and unnecessary, but really strange. I'm also thinking it could be weed/shebeen related.

Are you implying, certain predominantly African areas, are "no go" for Europeans (at least at certain times)? Is it safer for a European to reside/socialize in a predominantly "European" suburb? If that's the case, South Africa is really worse off then I initially thought.

umm it a well known that whites are more lightly to be targeted by crime in a predominantly poor African area

Hmmm, I think this may have been somewhat of a drug deal or something like that gone wrong... I just can't help but think that it's a bit strange to have a group of people just try and rape a women near a street, and worse, when she's with another guy? This sounds more like he was looking to buy maybe some weed, the guy demanded a little more money, the student refused, and then got stabbed after say, he tried to run from the dealer or something like this.

I'm not sure where you are going with this, but it is the same all over the world. It is dangerous to work alone at night in certain, predominantly poorer, neighbourhoods. Has nothing to do with SA.

If there were white people in townships with the same circumstances as our current "African" townships they would still be no go areas for richer whites. It's also safer for blacks or coloureds to reside/socialise in predominantly white areas, but the demographics of most neighbourhoods aren't strictly white/black any more these days. It's to do with the levels of crime and poverty, not the skin colour (although in SA it'll be pretty obvious when a white person walks through a township that they don't live there and are a better target for crime than the rest of the residents).

Its the same all over the world. White people in New York wouldn't willingly walk around dodgy areas in Harlem without feeling some sense of insecurity.

Well, I have to totally disagree with some of you. Poorer/poor people are not necessarily more criminal minded then rich ones ! ! ! Criminals are equally represented in all social strata! But if you maintain that poor people are criminals, perhaps in South Africa it is like that :( That tells me something too. And yes, I have visited quite a few countries over the years - rich and poor. For example, Bulgaria (a fairly small country in Europe) has a per capita GDP similar/less then South Africa's (do a google), yet their crime/murder rates is not even a third of South Africa's (per capita adjusted)! Same goes for other similar European/Asian countries. (OK, Afghanistan and the like, is a different story). Look at Cuba and do some comparisons before burning me for not agreeing with you. And yes 'ratty' I know a thing or 2 about NY. Unfortunately the 'rich' people in less developed places are the most criminals ! ! ! Is the people which shape the environment and not the other way around ! (As some of you imply) But perhaps South Africa is different. The question is: why? Was it always like this in South Africa?

 where was it said poor people are "more criminal minded"?

I wouldn't be caught dead walking around Central London at 3AM, let alone anywhere here in SA. Its not safe man, rather stay in doors. People wandering around at that time are usually stoned, drunk or criminals. Cross their path and its going to end up bad. Its always been like this unless you lived in a castle in medieval times with your very own all night pub, but even then they locked the castle gates at night to keep the troublemakers and criminals out!

Not necessarily, but in most (if not all) urban areas the poorer neighbourhoods will have more crime. Criminals will also usually come from the poorer classes, it doesn't mean all poor people are criminal minded but they have more of a need to turn to crime at any rate, especially in South Africa. And we have a huge gang culture here too, so I'm sure South Africa is worse off in this regard.

I understand that some poor countries have less crime overall, but inside almost any country the poor will make up the majority of the prison population/criminals.
