musical instruments

You'd be suprised how years of AirGuitar and simply looking at live musicians playing actually helped me learn to play a real guitar and churn out my first original song within my 1st two weeks of playing. ;)

AirGuitar ftw!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

A bit late, but congrats all the same! :)

How has it been going?

It's been going well thanks. I can play amazing grace but changing to the e chord is a tad slow. I am just trying to work out the right strumming for me. Will be doing that a bit later again...

Cool.

Just keep at it.
You know you've had enough practice per session when you wrist starts giving out on you.
Also work up those callues and pop them :p
Nylon strings will still be kind to you, once you get to steel strings, you'll really have wanted to get some "shielding" :p on those fingertips :)

Nah even Nylon stringed (strung?) guitars have their challenges.
Typical classical guitars have broader necks/fret boards and can be a bit of a stretch for people with small hands.
So perhaps you're finding yourself reaching for certain chords, but it's probably better to start out with a broader neck, cos when you move to a narrow fret board, you'll feel like a pro because of how "easy" it seems to get you chord on! :D

there is one cord I am finding hard right now. I have to put my finger, next to my thumb on all strings, then stretch the other 2 out. The G chord is a bit challenging as well. lol

I will lol. Pleayed all of yesterday afternoon and 30 min this morning so far. Decided to take a break and visit my broadband

Yeah, some people practice for too long and really wear themselves out mentally and physically.

They do this for a couple of days and try to force the issue and then just put the Guit down and never bother with it again, because they feel it's a waste of time.

Like I said earlier, if your wrist starts hurting, you've had enough for that session.
Take a break and put the guitar down for an hour or so.

It'll take a few days for you to get your wrist and fingers to stretch and adjust to all the new freaky positioning it has to get into, but don't let it wear you down.

Frequent breaks will help, from what I remember when I started anyway :)

Lol, within two days your fingertips will be smarting :)
But don't despair, it does go away and you get fingertips of steel ha ha.

I can feel it already lol. I still cant find my plectrum and only had it a few hours lol

LoL lost plenty of those and then became more accustomed to strumming with my fingers and have taken preference to it actually.

Yeah always get some spares :D

I need to go to the city in order to buy them lol. Nowhere around Napier or Bredasdorp can i find them lol

Get a sharp knife and some wood and carve your own :D

Any stores in Caledon you could make use of?

Never tried. Caledon is about half hour to 45 min drive from me. When i go to cape town for a weekend in a couple of weeks I will go look...

Been playing guitar for about 6 or 7 years now. Started on an cheap electric and it just snowballed from there.

Just started playing a violin. It's not that hard. :p
Although, I am taking a different route... (cheating)

How would you be cheating?
I've always considered violin or cello, but the lack of frets just throw me off.
Though honestly it should not be that hard.
I think what would throw me off is the usage of the bow...

How would you be cheating?
Well, I'm not taking the accepted way of learning via classical lessons. That saves you years on learning how to play.
I guess it depends on your targets. I want play the music that I hear inside by end October. I have no ambition to play someone else's music at this point.
(This, by the way, is how Jazz musicians learn to play)

You play via hearing, as every millimeter that you move your finger makes a different sound.
Though honestly it should not be that hard.

You can play a violin without the bow..
