Musicians' thread.

Copa, you're not associated with these guys by any chance? :D :p

No idea who they are, but I agree! :D

Ujochi (also a forumite) has this and he's loving it. It has great pre amps, sounds very clean. He's also a great guitarist.

So copa and nihilist (Ulquiorra :p) help me with some choices please?!

or

or something else?
I wanna try and keep it to R1.5k or so.

What free VST software are we looking at copa?

Yeah, saw that in your earlier post.
Goes for R1400 on Amazon, but then shipping and customs are not accounted for.
Friend in the USA could probably get it for me.
Wonder what shipping will be like..

Which DAW or VST is going to go best with that?

Reaper, it's [-]250[/-] 489 bucks, and as professional as they come, albeit with a bit of a learning curve, but they all have learning curves.

The two interfaces you linked to earlier did not appear to have mic inputs, which will not help you much unless you have a mixer.

As for VSTs, you are looking for guitar sounds, and what else?

True :o - I'm really flaking here :o
Sorry and thanks for pointing that out to me.

VST = Guitar sounds yes.

If you can get a friend to bring something from the States, you will be able to get a much better card, so if this is feasible, say so, and we can look at stuff in that price bracket.

As for guitar sounds:

This guy's stuff is epically good:

http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com/

You will see something there called LeCab, which you will need to use to load 'cab impulses', which are like mathematical 'pictures' of what a guitar cabinet does to the raw amp sound.

This guy:

Makes some of the best free plugs ever, including one of the best delays I have ever used.

Once you are ready to actually start working with this stuff, we can go into it in more depth.

This is me jamming with these various plug ins, through a crap soundcard, and without making much effort to make it sound particularly good:

Any DAW that supports ASIO (like, all of them) will be fine, that, as we mentioned before, is a personal choice. But go with Reaper, it's dirt cheap and very well supported, tons of videos on youtube for tutorials.

VSTs for Guitar, Copa can help you with. I use a bunch - I own Guitar Rig 4 which I love using on lots of different things but once you get into this you'll realize that some plugs are best for X and others are best for Y.

Also look at some of the other Focusrite interfaces, the Scarlet range is good too, when I'm not so grossly tired I'll get some lists for you to choose from. Just don't skimp on an interface, you'll be sorry if you do!

Found this at a local brick and mortar store, Frontline, in Maitland for R2k as well. Going around to a few others to guage prices and options.
Also found the 2i/2o for R1400, same brand. Dunno if that's feasible?

A quick look at the 2i/2o, makes it seem a pretty attractive option. The more expensive one doesn't have any more inputs, so I would not spend the extra money for things you don't need.

*edit*

Yeah, wow, looks KICKASS actually.

The more expensive one has 2i/4o iirc. Which I can't see being an issue for me. But I reckon for a starter, 1-2 man operation, the 2i/2o should do yes? Also it gives me room to get the preamp and Reaper for about R2k.

Is there a reason you'd need four outs anyway? As is, you can use headphones, and hook the thing up to speakers, what else would you need?

When you say preamp, what do you mean?

Mic preamp. Does the Saffire gear not have mic preamps? I was too hot and bothered to really spend time with it today. Really hot in CPT.

Mallrats has just started!

The 2i/2o has two mic pres, which also double as instrument/line ins. They are probably damned nice pres as well.

I'd highly recommend this, excellent unit, from what I can see, and perfect for what you need.

Thanks dude. Yourself and nihilist have been very patient & helpful :)

Now just, capo (which they're giving me for R150) and a set of Martin & Co. Eric Clapton steel strings (or similar). But Frontline don't have them. So will check out the other haunts.

Will be borrowing my DJ friend's Shure mics in the interim. Though he actually said he'd take me around to some spots & hook me up with some gear. Personal recommendations?

Pro(TM) tip with Shure mics.

Never, ever, EVER buy a second hand one.

There are a LOT of counterfeit Shure's out there, they're the most counterfeited mics in the world and the new ones are very hard to tell apart from the originals unless you know what to look for. So just make sure you buy from a authorised dealer. Check with the agents if you're not sure. I think a list is available on the Shure website.

You can't go wrong with a Shure SM58 and SM57, generally an SM58 is for micing a guitar cab and a SM57 is for vacals but I'm not terribly clued up on mics, but those two are famous and used on thousands of albums. They're also very rugged.
