Musicians' thread.

The production studio my cousin in law runs uses 3 doors hinged into a 3 sided cubicle, the interior walls coated in the knobbly foam people use on their beds.

They say it works a charm.

I'm limited for space - was considering an option like that.
But I may have to resort to a DIY on the stuff in that link I mentioned earlier.

Thanks though :)

By the way Shake&Bake, I want to apologize for not working on some lead for any of your tracks. I'm driving poor nihilist around the bend - Haven't touched an instrument in a month or three now... :(

Just can't ****ing create anything at the moment.

Ag, no worries boet.
I'm also plagued a lot of the times by getting into my groove - as it were.
I'm either struggling to find time/passion or subliminally procrastinating for some or other reasons :/

Wow, amazing how easily that happens.

I haven't been on my kit for like the last 6 months.

I'm seriously now considering getting rid of my Epihpone Les Paul Gold Top.
As much as it's a nice to have - I'm no electric guitarist - my first love will always be acoustic.
So I'm thinking I flog the LP and amp, put some more cash along with that sale and get me a bit of an upgrade in the semi-acoustic sides of things.

But wanna go around to some music stores and get to playing different guitars.

Not that I'm gonna be getting a Gibson Hummingbird anytime soon :erm:

But there was a great sounding Epiphone at (I forget the name of the place) in Tokai.

R6k to R8k budget - what do you all reckon is in line with that?

How much you asking for the Epiphone? :D

Thinking R3.5k? One tone knob is a bit scratchy though - never got round to having it serviced - or even figuring out how much it'd cost.
Doesn't affect my playing style at all though.
I'd likely throw in the amp at the same price - Peavey Backstage 35Watt - it's old, few scuff marks - think the speaker may have kakked slightly - so I'm not assigning any real value to it - still loud and proud though :D

*cofff* Got a friend that works for a courier - so countrywide shipping to any door in the country should be had for mahala or with a family discount ;)

Gotta hold back the tears - Epiphone's Hummingbird Acoustic going for a touch over R2k at Musician's Friend - and they're not shipping here :'(

No pickup - but can do that after...

Really sad now....

Ok, so been doing a bit of recon wrt to what my options are - went around to a few brick and mortar stores.

From what I saw and played - the Cort NDX 50 really appealed to me - bright, with depth and a looker.
The Yamaha's I saw seemed flat and lifeless.

Epiphone Hummingbird was a bit of a let down - weirdly. Very light in the weight department.
The sound from the Hummingbird I could do - but as a secondary guitar in certain instances or songs.

Played the Taylor GS Mini, great tone - but really small - I wanna feel that I got some Axe under me :p
Baby Taylor's I found were priced at R5k mark, but no stock in store.

Cort NDX 50 comes in at R4750 - well within budget for me.
But I'd like to hear your thoughts - and I'm still researching all of this.
Busy reading up and listening to demos on youtube, etc.

What do you guys use to create beats? Battery? I'm using Ableton and wanting to get a nice beat going - not sure whether I should be trying to find samples or just using the ones provided.

Also should I layer the kicks?

The sounds that come with Battery are pretty dated in some senses. In any event, Battery is a sampler, Ableton is a DAW. Ableton is a good DAW for that purpose, as far as I understand, although I loathe it with a fiery passion, personally.

Also should I layer the kicks?

Sort of.

What you should do is synthesize your own kicks (with a synth that has a suitably fast attack envelope) to the key of the song, and have a separate bass, click and 'thump', which you layer together and process.

You know, basically, the very best thing you can do is play as many guitars as you can until you fall in love.

Thanks yeah I know battery can be used in Ableton. Why don't you like Ableton out of interest? I have found it the easiest to work with.

I have tried making my own sounds using some samplers before but I'm really just fiddling with buttons and settings I don't really know what they do so I prefer to go with an already made sample and then tweak that to get a better understanding of what each setting does.

I'm just used to linear DAWS, Ableton just made my head swim immediately. I gathered you knew the difference, you just sort of phrased it as a choice between the two. Obviously though, you can load any samples into battery you like, but that then begs the question of why not get a more modern drum sampler in the first place...

I know this feeling well.

To your original question, should you layer the kicks, well, think about it.

Why would you want to? Why would you not want to?

It's sort of like asking, should I use compression?

The answer to most of these types of questions is A) If the circumstances warrant it (this is a long and steep learning curve) and most importantly B) Does it sound good (on a variety of playback systems).

There is no proper way to answer your question in other words.

If you had a specific drum hit, and asked 'should I layer something onto this'?, I might be able to help, as there's a context to work with.

That guy knows his **** like a priest likes... erm, scratch that, just get his stuff.

Thanks that's helpful. You use Reaper right? It doesn't come with anything AFAIK so you have to manually add vsts etc.?

Yes.

Here's the thing though... Reaper is $60. Other mainstream DAWs are in the several hundred dollar mark. The extra cash can then be used to buy plugins (the precise ones you want, as opposed to whatever comes preset within a DAW).

haha - like a priest! :D

My 1/2c wrt to Ableton - loathe it too - couldn't even figure out how to arm a track with it! :/

And will certainly be playing more guitars to find "the one".

nilhist won't be happy with this - but recordings are gonna go on a back burner of sorts for now.
My friend came over last night - he hasn't played the songs in so long - so it was kind of a flaky session and we were just not into it.

Plan of action now: Jam for the next 3 weeks, focus on 5 songs, start playing some small venues to just get out there and feel the love or discontent.
Think we're both about just playing and letting people hear it - perhaps that will inspire us to want to or be in the mood to record a bit more later.

So, for anyone that cares, I'll be updating gigs here.
Melting Pot in Muizenburg is the 1st haunt we're looking at.
Updates to follow.
