thanks guys, will now move this issue onto its own thread, it needs a lot more investigation, since I haven't heard anyone with a mywi antenna mention lightning arrestors yet, it seems the installers have been very irresponsible.
(although I can take full credit for my blunder)

Lightning protection for a direct strike is not possible with off the shelf stuff.
A lightning bolt coming down from a 1 or 2km up is not going to be bothered by a lightning protector. The protector is there so that you can claim from insurance.

A lightning protector or surge arrestor will help if you're close to a ligthning strike, but it's not guaranteed. The electric field around a lightning bolt is enough to fry a modem incl. the port it's connected to on a telephone line.

yeah and there just is no switching device faster than the speed of light [:p] thus theres no way to divert all that current away from your modem. basically put up a bigger pole next to your mast. Ground that pole very nicely. This way the lightning is likely to go for the higher pole. Or find some other way to de-wire the link from the lightning entry point to your AP.

You'll also be a millionaire if you can invent a way to harnass the power of a lightning strike ;-)

Interesting article on myadsl homepage - ICASA GETS TOUGH ON WIRELESS NETS. Icasa can't even keep their own house in order nevermind keeping up with change - how will they regulate wireless nets.

okay checkit.... would you take on 100000 people of the public and get slaughtered, or would you rather either a) make it legal like in all other 1st world countries, or b) not regulate it like they do telkom

i'm installing a 10dbi 120 degree sector antenna, reason why is because of where I'm based. Would be optimal.

I reckon I'd at LEAST be able to cover 10km no problem, however, if you have a directional antenna and LOS you could easily connect to me up to 20km away. Depends really I guess

Where are you located? Are you on NodeDB? When do you think you will be ready for some testing?

Does anybody know what the limit for EIRP (Effective Isotropic Radiated Power) is in South Africa. How would I work out EIRP depending on the hardware I have, I know it involves antenna gain and the power of the access point.
