Well I was doing 2km with 2x 13 dBi Patch Antenna's and D-Link DWL-2000AP+ Access Points. Getting 4ms - 130ms Ping Times without partial LOS. Transfered 55MB of MP3's in about 2.5min's. Couldn't get a link over 1.2km using same equipment with no LOS. I was told by the sales person I should get about 15km @ 11mbs with the Omni. Will report back though. §

even 1km is a stretch in a built up area with no LOS. Unless you have a very high power transmitter ala Sentech. I think anything above 1km is a stretch in the city which is where the people are..

The average footprint of an 802.11b installation with a 15dbi omni is 5km depending on elevation. You need to be high enough the clear the fresnal zone. If your fresnal is obstructed, your range is significantly decreased.

With jawug you should be running a directional antenna to the node closest to you. The idea of an omni/sectorial/flat panel is to provide access to the jawug network for your neighbourhood or passers by. The directional antenna is purely for the backbone. Same as the wireless lan in New York (http://www.nycwireless.net/)

Well the Omni was a huge waist of money on my side as the LOS thing really affects it alot. Ended up buying a nother 16 dBi Yagi instead. So he a working link running using 2x 16 dBi Yagi's. Played some Call of Duty over it last night and worked great. (Only got the link up last night). Not sure on the speeds as yet will test 2nite using QCheck.

Onmi's are generaly for saturating an area, if your looking at distance, look at Flatpannel of grid antenna, you will get between 1-10 km with them, however, the following play a huge role.

1. Dbi - the stronger this is the more clear your signal will be. It does not increase distance.

2. Milliwatt - now this is where you get your distance from. normal AP's are 100mw as per SA regulation however you can buy 200mw at the same price from some manafactures as well as ampliphers whcih will go up to 1000 mw.

I bought Senao SL3054CB3+ AP's from Miro. They are suppose to be 200mW units. I'm going to be testing with a Flat Pannel or two as the maximum speed I'm currently getting is about 150KB's. Wich isn't to good as I was getting better speeds using 2x D-Link DWL-2000AP+ units (32mW) and 13 dBi Flat Panels. The only other thing that might be causing problems is the 3m Pig Tail I purchased N(m) to TNC(m)RP there is a huge 1.5 dB loss on it. Might look at buying some better quality cable some time.
