I have been using MWEB 4meg uncapped for over 2 years now and thought that if I waited until MWEB brought their 10meg uncapped pricing down, I would give it a go.
Currently MWEB's 10meg uncapped cost is = R999 + R425 = R1424 or All inclusive R1359
Afrihost's 10meg uncapped = R997 + R425 = R1422 or All inclusive R897 (OMG!)

For my test comparison, I used the MWEB 10meg uncapped vs the Afrihost free 1GB account. It is debatable whether this is a fair comparison or not but the Afrihost account should represent the best case scenario for uncapped right?

My ADSL stats:
Speed Attenuation Noise Margin
Down: 10015kbps 20.5 13.6
Up: 1023kbps 11.5 8.3

Local Line performance:

I understand that full 10meg throughput cannot be obtained on my current line sync. If you are to get full 10meg throughput, your line needs to synced at 11.8meg for more. This is due to ADSL overhead. Generally optimal throughput is between 83-87% of line sync speed.

International Line performance:

Torrents:
Do not have a screenshot of torrents speeds but on MWEB I can get to speeds of 1MB/sec while afrihost peaks at about 600kB/s.

Conclusion:
Depending on what you use your line for, Afrihost has offers the best value for money only if you take out their all inclusive offer. MWEB has the premium "all-rounded" offering and is at a cost. Their all inclusive package does not incentivize to move your ADSL line over to your ISP. Hope this helps some of you making your decision.

A question:
I have witnessed that on MWEB, that running both torrents & http downloads have had a significant impact in total download speeds achieved. When running only one or the other will you achieve full speed. Also there seems to be a few minute cooldown when switching from the one to the other. ie. after http downloads and then switching to torrents, the torrents will lag for a few minutes before accelerating and also vice versa. (Also taking into account that torrents do require the download to be seeded before gaining speed). Anyone witnessed this?

Good Morning RPG_Fan

The MWEB speed test results seem better than that of the capped Afrihost account.

This however is not a fair comparison between two accounts, as the MWEB account is a shaped account.

Capped products tend to be unhindered by shaping protocols and normally provide better throughput than shaped accounts. It would probably be more ideal to compare a MWEB capped account with a Afrihost capped account or an MWEB uncapped 10mb product with the Afrihost 10mb uncapped product.

Thanks for this thread, great to see people really putting ISP's through their paces. From company to company, we like to all play nice, but it's always good to let the products speak for themselves.

Like some of the posts mentioned, each ISP brings their special flavour to the party, to suit what the individual client is looking for. I just love the fact that our products stand up against anything out there in the market today, even though we are considered the "underdog". And every now and again, the little guy wins :)

Please PM me any questions you might have about our uncapped, and please also PM if you want the August birthday special to try out the 10Mbps Uncapped so you can do a direct comparison. We'd be very keen to see the results :)

Mweb vs Afrihost 10mb Uncapped

Currently using Afrihost 10 mb uncapped. Only reason im happy with it is because of the birthday special for this month. Speed is all ova the place, between 4 mb and 10 mb whatever time of day.

I would like to hear from mweb 10 mb users. How is the performance compared.

Thanks Guys

The 10meg uncapped from Mweb is flawless. Have not had any issues with speed or throttling. Torrents, uTube @ 1080p, http downloads, etc. works like magic. Though R1500 per month is quite a bit for internet

Thanks RPG_Fan, great feedback :)

As for the price, we know there are cheaper service offerings out there and some of our competitors are very proud of the fact that they're able to undercut our prices.

Me? I like flawless and I don't mind paying a little extra for it! :)

Thanks for the feedback.

I guess you get what you pay for.
But I know Afrihost has been having some issues on their network, hoping it gets better. The weekend wasn't as bad as the weekend before.

why would anyone take that?

when they can get 10mbps uncapped + line rental for a r100 more.

any chance of a 7mbps uncapped bundle for R600
