Mweb 1MB Line vs Telkom 1MB Line

Hi all, I'm one of the many thousands fed up of Hellkom, and what's made it even worse, is that they have overcharged me R400 for Top-Up I didn't buy. So I have a question, which 1MB uncapped line is currently the best in terms of speed and reliabilty, I know quite a few people have Mweb accounts but I'm not sure how fast or reliable it is. I know that there are some other options like Axxess, Afrihost or Neotel, but very few people that I know use them, so I would like your opinion on which ISP offers the best line. If I have stated something incorrectly please fell free to correct me

Mweb is not a bad choice at all. Their network is pretty reliable and their customer service is good. also consider moving your line rental to them as well, as it is cheaper if you rent the line with them. However they do shape quite terribly during the day, torrents are especially effected.
Another option is openweb gold. Loved by all here on the forum as it would appear, although you do pay a premium. Bear in mind though that openweb uses all major backbones in the country, making it the most reliable network in SA (I think) and they don't shape heavily.

Both of these ISP's will give you roughly the same speed. It just depends on how they shape/throttle you. (which mweb does a lot more of, it seems)

Not in my experience, no.

Well seeded torrents easily get 45/70 during the day.

I would not call that 'super-shaped', and if the expectation is that torrents will be 100% all the time, then I'm not sure where that idea came from in the first place.

Gaming was at the top, along with something else, HTTP and email, below.

So, that's a reference, although, I presume you will just say they are lying.

From my experience this is not the case on Mweb. The only services I experience shaping are torrents and file lockers (i.e. rapidshare and the lot). When I played WoW, MWeb uncapped gave me the best latency I had ever had and that was after 5 years of chopping and changing ISPs.

I cannot comment on Telkom but I am completely sold on Mweb 1 meg uncapped, if that makes any difference

I intend to use it for downloading, via mainly News Servers, but also some torrents, preferably I would like to get something under R600

Mweb will shape 1Meg into 384 and 384 into dialup feel. Most people happy with it are the 24/7 downloaders or the guys who don't know what the various speeds should be like.

Have you found an ISP that you are happy with?

I dunno, bottom line is, my experience on MWEB has been positive, especially since the upgrade, and most importantly, what is the better option in that price bracket?

The one I'm on works most of the time.

My Mweb experience is that they shape too much. It renders 384 unusable for most tasks.

I don't think that's really MWEB's fault, since 384 is unusable to begin with, doesn't take much shaping at all to completely destroy an already absurdly slow product. This is not MWEB's issue though, and with regard to 1 meg to 384 speeds, that's simply not true.

I'm on Telkom 1mb uncapped, no shaping. Torrents run at 100kB all day(obviously depends on the seeds) Download from news server at full line speed too if the file is cached.

I've yet to try it, but I believe it's mildly shaped, like their original product.
