Hi, I have mweb 1mbps adsl uncapped. I am currently only able to download at like 30kbps. Is this the speed i should be getting because i read that everyone else is getting about 100kbps on a 1mb adsl uncapped connection. Please help.

Hey there,

That is pretty slow. What you need to identify are a few things:
1) How fast are the servers you are downloading from serving you
2) Are you the only one using the connection
3) Is that the only application using the bandwidth
4) Is your exchange congested

First one, try downloading from other sources, maybe just do a speedtest (speedtest.mybroadband.co.za)
Two, fairly self explanatory
Three - not sure of your technical knowledge, try make sure everything else is closed
Four, easiest is to see if your speed changes at different times of day. Typically in a business are daytime will be slower while faster in the evenings while residential areas are normally the other way around.

also... what line are you on?384k or 1 meg? the 384k still haven't been upgraded to 1 meg as yet

Hi, I have a 1 meg uncapped connection on mweb. Thanks for the response Bern. I used speedtest and I get 0.30mbps download and 0.10 mbps upload. I have a few questions.

1. How do I check which servers I'm using.
2. How do I check if my exchange is congested.

I tried downloading from different sources like fztvseries and 4share and I get slow 30 and 20 kbps respectively.

Thank u for ur quick responses.

Sounds like your exchange is the issue, you should be getting .8Mbps down and .4 Mbps up at least - that is my minimum on MWEB always on a few lines I have tested until the exchange gets busy. To test the exchange you can buy 1GB of quality bandwidth (no shaping/throttling) once off and run some speedtests then. Again make sure all your torrents, software updates etc are off.

In terms of filesharing, really that is all pot luck and is about seeding/leaching etc. Hard to predict what you will get, but I can tell you I get lots of stuff of Pirate Bay and get very fast speeds on most of them (I take time to read the comments etc). Also see if you download from a couple of them if the speed of one decreases when you run others simultaneously.

If your line is also with MWEB give the helpdesk a buzz and see if they can get some more info on the exchange for you.

I think ur line speed is currently set at 384K. Telkom will only upgrade 384K users to 1Mb in October. Confirm with Telkom

Hi Bear1807

I would like to look into this from our side in order to provide you with more information.

Please PM me your MWEB account details in order to investigate.

Are sure you don't mean 30kB/s

30kbps means 30k bits / sec, which would be slow
30kBps means 30k bytes / sec which would be the around expected speed.
