Mweb 384K Uncapped Shaped expected torrent speeds

Hi Guys

Finally got my hands on a uncapped 384K Mweb account after using 3G for years.
What speeds do you usually get during the day on popular torrents?

- From 8am yesterday till 11pm the max speed I got was 2kbps.
- From 11pm yesterday till 8am this morning it shot up to 40kbps
- As soon as 8am hit it dropped back down to 2kbps and it is still stuck there
- Any HTTP download "flys" at 40kbps.
- If I connect my 3G card from Vodacom it also flys at 40kbps.

I know the account is shaped but this is ridiculous. I understood shaping to be prioritizing certain ports over others, not completely limiting/throttling PTP during the day?

Am I the only one experiencing this or is this "normal" behavior?

Seems like pretty normal behavior to me. I have the same experience with the same product, so it's definitely not just you. Unfortunately there isn't much we can do beyond renting a seedbox or something like that beyond the borders of SA.
 
Had the same problem as you did with the downloads over P2P coming in at 2kbps but the problem went away after I got the unshaped package from them.

So I think that the shaping they are selling is "shaped" and that they want your hard earned money if you want no shaping....
 
At least I am not alone. It is just so disappointing, I was expecting slow speeds during peak hours but 2kbps is really crazy. Shaping is one thing, throttling you into the ground is another. Guess I will be trying another ISP to see if anyone else has better policies. Only been with MWEB 3 days and I am already canceling. :)
 
The before and after upgrading my Mweb account and switching the router on and off earlier today.

pretty normal, also subscribed 2 days ago on 4mbps, am busy downloading an iso file about 700mb and averaging on 12KBps, but i think it also depends on available seeders (i have 3 seeds/1 peers)... i paused and now downloading a 54mb file with 44 seeds speed is averaging at 135KBps ...
 
Mine definitely isnt a seed problem, there are over 10000 seeds. If I use my 3G card it also gets much better. I am thinking of giving Openweb a try, their support on this forum seems to be excellent.

Hi Paul,

P2P is shaped 24/7. Your speed is determined by the amount of users contesting for the same filesharing bandwidth and the requirements of priority services. If you are looking for a "no holds barred" P2P experience then you should consider moving to an unshaped product

Well it's uncapped! You can't compare it to 3G where you pay for every gb. Torrentz are slow during the day but after hours it runs at full speed.

Fair point, but the poor guy was expecting to actually use all that data MWEB said they would give him. Is PaulPorter's problem unique, or is it all 384k users getting this speed during the day? I don't know, 2Kb/s is more than just slow... its pointless.

I was considering it, and it just doesn't work out: I'm on a 4mbps line and I average about 60Kb/s during the day, which is roughly 15% of my line speed, 2Kb/s on a 384 line is 0.05% of line speed. Something wrong, either with the individual line or MWEB's shaper is very bias (or, i'm sucking at my math skills). Either way, I don't think the response from MWEB was sufficient.
 
Gosh, reading all these threads and speeds complaints, blessed to receive speeds of 120-300Kb/s free of charge on 3G.
 
It's only on torrents, newsgroups and http downloads are generally faster. Try the iTunes store - you get full speed Yes they shape you during the day, check the speeds at night.

Yes and no. Codes dude.


Vodacom seems to have some juicy speeds at night though, mostly use MTN. Check when I'm currently doing on Vodacom -

After 1am ... maybe, but then not quite at 'full' speed. Around 60% of possible for your line.

I can understand shaping and prioritizing but I find it hard to believe there is such a distinct change when 11pm hits. Are other users really taking up that much of MWEB's bandwidth peak hours hours leaving only 2kbps for lower priority ports...
