Hi All

I currently have a VERY SLOW connection.

Telkom closer 4 with MWEB 384 uncapped. I am having trouble with all google sites - they load so slowly (adwords, analytics, gmail etc).

I am going to switch to a faster line now.

Not sure if I should go for MWEB 4MB uncapped or Afrihost 50GB capped? I don't think I would use more than the 50GB, but it would be nice to be on uncapped.

I am in Greenpoint, and think I would probably get 10MB from the exchange... so i think that would be supported by afrihost

Any thoughts on this?

That sounds like an issue that is completely unrelated to line speed. Have you tried another browser, or deleting or your temporary internet files?

On topic, if you play games, get the capped account. If you don't, then go or uncapped.

Hi

Yes, tried deleting temp files, clearing cache etc. Doesn't seem to help.

MWEB gave me a proxy a while ago (2 months or so) - that helped alot, but then a few weeks ago it stopped working. I think it was something to do with them 'upgrading their network'.

Don't really play games online.

The most I have used on the 384 line is 15GB, I don't think I could really use that figure to estimate what I would use on the faster line though - perhaps it would be over 50GB.

Benefits of going with Afrihost seems to be that I would probably get 10MB unshaped, while MWEB would give me 4MB shaped.

On Afrihost 384kbit line uncapped i was throttled after 20 GB, I would assume something similar will happen to you. The stupid thing is that they throttle you, meaning everything is dial up speed, so even browsing is impossible. Mweb however will shape your torrents more agressively, leaving you to browse at normal speeds. I moved to MWEB because of this. Two weeks into the month on uncapped with afrihost meant I basically didn't have an internet connection anymore. So far happy with MWEB - torrents are basically zero during the week, and max line speed on the weekend.

ok, but I am not looking at Afrihost uncapped - I am looking at the 50GB capped account. I spoke to a sales rep who says you will get the full 50GB at fulls speeds.

mmmm they are the same price approx...i would go for the uncapped...my http is flying yet i can still do news and torrents at night...7-8 gb

I'd have to agree with drukkie. If they are the sam price, then why not go for MWEB uncapped if you don't use it for playing games. I'm on MWEB uncapped and I have been very happy with them for bout 4 months or so. Like drukkie says browsing is a breeze and you can do torrents at fair speeds offpeak.

Ok thanks for the advice.

Checked with Telkom and my area is getting 10MB.

PS: I see afrihost are running a special where you get double the traffic on the Gold packages. So I'd get 100GB instead of 50GB unshaped - for R475 or so

if you get 100Gb sweet...it would work then...just find out if it's prmotional...i think its untill the end of the year...
and if you don't want to do more than that rather get capped...

Ja it is a promotion.

They say that will either re-evaluate the packages or continue with specials.

Oh well - i went ahead and upgraded my line with telkom to what they said would be 10MB, then called the adsl people, who said i am getting 6MB.

And I changed my MWEB package to the 4MB uncapped one.

Browsing is ok - I thought it would be a bit faster. Will try this out for a while and see how it goes.

It's confusing on their web site. I checked, it's actually 25+25=50.

AHHHH right!! I also noticed that 25+25, but didn't click! Thanks for pointing that out!

personally if you know you aren't going to over the 50Gig mark, then I would get the Afrihost capped.

the capped account is nice if you decide on changing your line speed, as it isn't a fixed account like say "4Meg Uncapped" which will only be 4Meg.

on the Afrihost account I am pretty sure you will be able to get your 10Megs worth or whatever your line syncs at.

I think that is probably just a "burst" moment since you say your line is capable of 10Meg.

just like say downloading on a 4meg would sometimes jump to like 500KB/s.

Like I said, I went ahead and got the Mweb 4meg account. I tested last night with a friend Afrihost login details, and the Mweb stats acually looks slightly better (see above)

The telkom adsl help desk guys say my line is syncing at 6megs

oh my bad, never read that part.

k so you did Speedtest, but how is your downloading during the day?

can you post a Speedtest from Afrihost?

downloads duing the day are ok with mweb. although i dont really know what to compare it to. was getting around 200kb/per sec.

Both speed tests were around 5.07MB downloads, 0.52 uploads.

Mweb ping test was 0.16 and Afrihost 0.60

did that twice with very similar results

As @Off-The-Chart said, if you're probably not going to use more than the 50GB, it's probably a better idea to go for the Afrihost account, and my reasoning is twofold:
1) Afrihost currently have a special where you get twice the bandwidth (so 100GB for the price of 50)
2) The Afrihost account, because it's 'capped' bandwidth, won't be shaped as hard as their uncapped accounts.

However, Mweb do have their own bandwidth as opposed to Afrihost who are reselling IS bandwidth pretty exclusively if I'm not mistaken, so this gives them more options, and from what I hear they're constantly upgrading this capacity too

Still, especially because of the special, I'd personally give the Afrihost account a go first... most months I do around 40-50GB, so 100GB would be more than enough, and shaping/contention is surely not nearly as bad on those accounts.

Yeah, agreed - but as biometrics pointed out. I think you're getting 50GB from Afrihost (25+25 special) for R475; which is in the comparable range to mweb's uncapped @R539ish

anyway - I was already with Mweb on the 384 uncapped line, so I thought it would be less hassle to try out their 4Meg uncapped first. Might try afrihost in the next few months
