Mweb Abuse Notification

I average between 400 and 600gb in a month, and have never had a warning.

What I do:

Limit my speeds to 300kb/s ( Just so that I can use the rest of the internet for other stuff, occasionally unthrottling if I am in a hurry )
Don't go absolutely insane on the downloading. I've got 20TB of disk here on my desk, and it's getting dangerously close to being full - Where do people store the stuff they download? Or do you guys delete after you are done? ( I am a bit of a pack-rat, nothing gets deleted )
Try and do my downloads overnight, since that's the best time to go for it
Never ever torrent - Subscribe to one of the various oneclick hosts, for like R70/mo you are practically immune to being traced for your downloads, and you get guaranteed speeds.

So what do you download?

It's a matter of principle. My contract is with MWEB, not the rest of their network. If they are experiencing congestion then they need to increase their capacity. It really is that simple.

LOL. Really. THis is like people complaining about BIS being abused, but will gladly suck their ISPs dry if they can.

EDIT: No, SSung, not pointing fingers at you, but your post prompted my response.

You are right drukkie - arguing about it is pointless. Rather just leave until they see the light. I did.

This is how the cancellation email reads:

MWEB Notification - 24 hour Notice of Termination - xxxxxxxxx

This email serves as a notice regarding your MWEB ADSL service.

Your current ADSL usage pattern shows repeated instances of continuous bulk downloads over prolonged periods. This is in contravention of our Acceptable Use Policy as defined below:

• You may not restrict, inhibit or interfere with the ability of any person to access, use or enjoy the Internet or the any services, or create an unusually large burden on our network, including, without limitation, continuously uploading or downloading streaming video or audio; continuous FTP uploading or downloading, or otherwise generating levels of traffic sufficient to impede others' ability to send or retrieve information, or to use the services in an abusive manner in connection with any unlimited packages, options or promotions.

According to our records this is the third notification we have issued and we are left with no choice but to initiate steps to cancel your service with 24 hours notice.

In addition to this, your ADSL line number(s) will be blacklisted on our system. Should you attempt to create a new account on the same ADSL line, this account will not be able to connect.

Please note that in the event of this occuring, MWEB will not be held liable for any subscription costs which you incur in this manner.

Should you have an All-inclusive product with us, your line will be migrated back to Telkom upon cancellation.

I'm proud yet confused at the same time.

Firstly, I can't parse whatever they're trying to say. Is this just telling me that I'll be given 24h notice, or is it the actual 24h notice?

Secondly:

1st warning 13/12/12

2nd warning 23/01/13

Notice of Termination 06/02/13

So it looks like they move pretty quickly once they've decided they don't like you.

2nd warning was received for a period during which I was on an Openweb trial for about a week. The 'Notice of Termination' was given for a period covering ~2 weeks. Those last 2 weeks have actually been really terrible in terms of performance of my MWEB account. So terrible, in fact, that I was considering complaining about the throttling/shaping interfering with my ability to 'abuse' the service.

Thirdly:

MWEB are still billing me R488/month for 1mb AIC. Most recently for the period up until 28/02/13. Even after I'd already complained to them. Then somebody calls me from MWEB today to tell me that I actually have a 2mb line. I have never requested/opted to have my line upgraded & the line has never performed anywhere close to 2mb. Plus I'm still being way overcharged for 1mb AIC. MWEB clearly have no idea what they're doing.

Fourthly, for clarification:

I believe that MWEB (& others) are deceptively advertising certain 'uncapped' services. It's obvious now that my service is capped. No, it doesn't matter that it's a 'soft' cap, or that it's applied intermittently. Whatever method they're using amounts to a cap at the end of the day.

AUP/FUP can be read to apply to anyone using the service. It's so vague that it can be used against any/every activity typically associated with ADSL.

Lastly:

I don't care if you want to say/think 'good riddance' etc.. I really just don't; 'coz I'm not upset & just want a smooth transition to another ISP & a refund of the money I'm owed for the overcharging.

Getting booted off MWeb was such a good thing to happen to me.
Jumped around between ISP's for a bit and never quite quite satisfied - then found OpenWeb. End of story.

R488 if your line is 2mb and your uncapped service is 1mb. If both are 2mb then R599 pm. The 1mb line to 2mb line was a telkom upgrade that had nothing to do with mweb.

I've been paying R488 for a service that performs nowhere near 2mb. I was told a multitude of different things by MWEB & they claim to have sent me an email. All I want is my refund before I'm kicked off.

"You may not restrict, inhibit or interfere with the ability of any person to access, use or enjoy the Internet or the any services, or create an unusually large burden on our network"

Oh, so a person using the full potential of the line he is paying for, is restricting others to access the internet?
To me, it rather sounds like them not having enough bandwidth for everybody to go around...

The only ones who are restricting users from "enjoying" the internet, is MWeb themselves.

You only need to use the full potential of your line for short periods to be nabbed by the AUP. Many things people typically do with their ADSL connection can be interpreted as 'abuse' according to MWEB. Enjoying Youtube, downloading large email attachments, playing games...& it's worse if you're on a slower service, as your dl/ul will always be more prolonged than somebody on a faster line.

How did you guys get your notifications?

Mine gets sent to my gmail account for some reason.

You are not paying R488 for a 2mbps service mate... you are paying for a 1mbps service.

Are you aware that Telkom upgraded all the 1024kbps ADSL users in the country to 2048kbps in August 2012? For free I might add. No one had any say in the matter... not you, not MWEB. You are the one making a fool of yourself by blaming MWEB for this. Ask mweb to downgrade your line to 1mbps and all should be fine and dandy.

Also, you are wrong to expect a 2mbps line to perform at 2mbps while using just a 1mbps account.
