MWEB Automatically Upgrading From 10Mbps To 25 Mbps

So just received an e-mail from MWEB that they will be automatically upgrading my 10/5 to a 25/25! And of course there will be a price increase to R499. I got the 10/5 deal because it was cheap at R399 and the speed was just fine for what I use it for.

Now they go and upgrade to 25/25 without anyone saying they need an upgrade and the lowest Openserve product is now 25/25.

What happened to the 10/5 speeds that many people prefer because ti is cheaper it suits people just fine.

Have fibre prices increased?
 
It's a significant speed bump for R100 more. Openserve and Vumatel have dumped the 10Mbps packages I believe...

Yes it is a decent increase in speed, but here's the thing there are some people who would like to get fibre but would like the cheapest available as they don't need a high speed like so 10Mbps is just fine. IMO they could be losing out on all those people. I don't need 25/25 and was quite happy with the R100 saving.

Good day

The current changes are the result of a notice received by Openserve. Mweb has held back the impact of these changes wherever possible. Openserve will migrate all customers to higher speeds.

I get what you are saying but look at this way, most places like metrofibre are offering 10/10 for R650ish.

Since the package you were on is canceled, R499 is now the cheapest entry level package

This is exactly what I meant.

You are still getting a good deal. Go check the metrofibre prices through rocketnet/cool ideas and you won't feel as bad

Just checked so MWEB is about R100 cheaper.

Any idea what the thinking is behind removing the 10/5 option at a cheaper price?
 
MWEB says that the change will take place in April, but I have already had an increase in speed to 25 download, but the upload speed is only 10, so maybe that will change in the future.

I guess it's more profitable and makes economical sense.
Many ISP's already said in the past they were barely breaking even on entry level packages, in some cases a loss....

So by increasing entry level pricing, perhaps they will lose some customers as you pointed out, but probably part of their strategy.

My theory is, the price difference of those who don't mind the higher prices of the entry level, will make up for the 'lost' revenue of the entry level customers who wasn't really profitable in the first place...

So now ISP will only have 10 (made up number) customers instead of 15 (made up number) customers, but make the same (or more) profit.
For them, that's good, because they can be both more profitable (give away less free routers) and can perhaps provide better customer service, because there's fewer people to deal with, etc.

If you want the opposite effect, see what happened to Rain when they reduced their pricing. It's not pretty, both for them and especially customers.

Interesting. Though I think it was Openserve who made the changes and the ISPs were forced to change their products accordingly.

Anyone know if ISPs still give out free fibre routers and free installation. I got free installation and a free router when I signed up with MWEB quite a while back.

I honestly don't keep any eye on what happens unless there are changes to speed and price.
 
Yes R499 is a good price for 25/25.
I currently pay R779 for 30/30 with MWEB on Octotel.
I'd happily pay R499 for a 25/25 on Octotel too.
Octotel have been very quiet regarding any cost changes.....
 
You’re lucky you not on MFN... R1300 for my 100/100 with CISP
 
I was with sadv and was happy, now that it has been taken over by vumatel it has become a mess, pricing is crazy and speeds often seem to be all over the place, some evenings almost half of what it should be. Wish we had other options here.
 
Got my speed bump 2 days ago , 25 / 25
 
I got my speed bump to 50/25 but also a price increase from R699 to R739 from 1st April with no warning.

Dont want the extra cost so changed to the new 25/25 R499 package.

But got charged R150 to change my line speed back to what is was. WTF MWEB!!!!
 
Yep mweb seems to be the only one charging extra for the upgrade but still cheaper than other isp's.

The only issue I have is that from about 8pm my 50mbs line runs between 4 - 10mbs. Very frustrating.
