Hi guys

I recently subscribed to MWEB. I was interested in buying a local only account and set it up with route sentry. But in the router config, it only allows MWEB accounts on the router? IOW, Mweb is being very selfish here:( Please any help would be great!

See the similar thread for Nashua and their Billion router...

Some of the MWeb routers are locked. Not much you can do about it.

Sometimes flashing the router with the right firmware can unlock it...but this is dangerous.

What?
Could you imagine if telkom locked our routers!

I have only had DSL for a year so I wouldn't know but mine isn't locked.

Hey guys - i know its been a while... started chating to a guy from Billion on their online chat service from their website. Turns out MWeb removes the Billion Serial to Ethernet adapter that is normally supplied with the routers and is obviously needed to flash a new firmware on any 74xx product. The guy was nice enough to take my details and send me one - will let you all know how it went

Sweet ***** - you gotta be kidding me. Are MWEB still doing this!!!!!

I thought they had given up when we hacked their "big black box" 56k modems back in the late '90's

Guys just a little update... I put forward a complaint to ISPA regarding Nashua locking their routers and just got a response from the general manager of Nashua.

They will look at changing all advertising in the next few weeks to ensure it is mentioned that the router is locked as they realise they are at fault for not doing so. They are also still discussing what to do with routers once the 12 month contract is up. They feel they have until February 2009 to do so as this is when the first 12 month period will be up. Enough pressure and I am sure they will need to make a call to unlock them. They are unwilling to change this locking of routers rule as they feel their offering is the cheapest on the market and they are entitled to do so. They argue that their top ups are the cheapest which in Nashua case is debatable!

So bottom line they are not willing to budge on this but will be reviewing the procedure after the 12 months is up so we will see what happens then.

I for one do not mind being locked in for the initial period but I do not see the benefit of an expensive brick thereafter if I decide not to stay with Nashua....

As far as I understand it Mweb gives those routers away for free no contract nothing. How else are they suppose to protect their investment?

Go buy yourself a router then you can do what you want, they are not that exspensive.

There is a work around to get multiple connections on a Mweb locked router. It requires PPPOE connection to the router. I'm running both Mweb and IS through my network locked modem. I have the Billion 7401VGP.

I also have the Billion 7401VGP router (Network Locked, I have 2 of them *g*)
I cancelled my Mweb Contract as their service is very inadequate and now have Neotel, I still use the router to network and to share ICS, works fine for me.

Please can you tell me how this works...I can't seem to get mine to do this, no matter what I try.

I would also like to know if there is a fix as I would like to go with MWeb for DSL. I think others would also like an answer to this as well.

Right Nick, you need to go into much more detail. there are a lot of us out here who have these modems and badly want to split our local and international traffic using RouteSentry.

I have tried to reflash Billion 7401VGP router with a number of different firmwares from different websites. No Luck, always 'wrong hardware version' error.

How the flip did you get it right???

You cannot setup a pppoe on a network locked router. It does not allow bridged connections.

Yip the router doesn't have the bridged function but a friend of mine said there is a way around it. He said that trying to force M-web to unlock the router pose a threat to them as they might lose customers and the fact that it's locked is specified in the terms and conditions but I didn't read any of that. Apparently we need some .emg file that'll help us unlock the router. Billion support themselves doesn't wanna help unlock the darn thing.
