hi guys, i emailed mweb about their high prices for only a 3 Gig cap. this is what it read:

A number of ISP's have recently reduced the prices of their ADSL accounts. 30GIG accounts are now as low as R349 and in some cases R299. Users of these ISP's, which include Axxess, WebAfrica and SAOL, have reported excellent customer service and reliability as can be seen on the MyADSL website. The question i would like to pose is why are we paying such exorbitant fees (R329) for only a 3GIG account? Surely most people would choose a higher capacity account over value added services such as microsoft encarta online, which we hardly use anyway?

and this is the lousy answer i got from them. they basically agree with me regarding their value added services, almost ignorantly so.

Good day ******

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

At MWEB we're committed to connecting you to a fast, secure and reliable Internet experience. The MWEB ADSL rate compares well with those of other national ISP's.

We also offer our ADSL members full access to a wide variety of Member Only services, including:
excellent customer support,
7 days a week protection against e-mail viruses and junk mail,
Sending SMSs over the Internet, Away Messages, SMS E-mail Alerts, etc. Learning & Library

With MWEB ADSL, members can keep their existing username and password when upgrading to the next available cap limit. Customers at many other ISPs, by contrast, need a new username and password every time they want to purchase another 3 Gigabytes of full-speed ADSL access in the course of a month Should you require any further information or assistance, do not hesitate to contact us

the only reason i still am with them is because of customer support in jhb. axxess, webafrica etc are all based in the cape, and their customer support numbers are either long distance call charges or premium 0861 numbers. when will they be expanding in to jhb? i mean theres a really huge market on this side

Customer Support

What do you need in customer support. I am local and offer the same as webafrica. Drop me message.

they charge R329 per month for 3 Gigs, and basically use member only services such as microsoft encarta online as an excuse to charge such high rates. im 110% sure that almost all users would choose a high cap over these services any day. nobody actually uses them anyway

If you really need the M-Web content you might as well get their Select package for R79-00 and a Web Africa 30Gig account for R199.

I don't understand the whole 'support' aspect, if your line goes down there's not much M-Web can do about it.

We have accounts with Tiscali that was swallowed up by MWeb.
These accounts with MWeb through our comany will all be cancelled in the very near future. Our email addresses are no longer dependant on them as we have our own domain, so bye bye high prices, and online services which we have never ever been used.
I hope more people and companies follow in our footsteps and the message gets out that robbery will not be tolerated.

for this very reason i hope that other ISP's would expand into jhb. they would make a fortune every which way. Axxess WebAfrica etc *hint hint*

sometimes people have difficulty connecting to the network, and the problem often lies with the service provider. hence the need for local customer support. i will in no way support telkom's premium 0861/0862 numbers or exhorbitant long distance charges, and im sure most people feel the same way too.

Ok..here is a concept: If you downgrade your MWeb account from ADSL to their basic non dial up account (R79), you can keep your email, and "value-added" services. Then take a 10 GB axxess account...you'll be paying less than before for 7GB more data.

...hmmm...MWeb, have thought about this?

Highflyer_GP, I have a suggestion for you. Cancel your Mweb account and sign up with Web Africa. For the next 3 months, take the money you're saving (R130 P/M), put it under your matress and then if you ever need to make a support call, you can use the money you have saved. :)

Honestly though, I've thought about the fact that Axxess is in PE and I'm in CT. Most problems can be sorted out via email, unless of course it's a connectivity problem or an email problem. Don't let the distance put you off. You might never have any problems - and then you'll kick yourself for wasting money on Mweb.

i guess that makes sense. plus i havent heard of many people complaining about axxess and webafrica here. thanks guys

yeah I can justify spending R20 extra for having excellent customer support, but more than that ... hey!

I wonder why some people need so much support? ISP support is mostly needed until you are up and running, thereafter almost no support is needed. I would not worry if I have to call a cape number for support 2 times in the year, as I am paying fraction of what the JHB companies are charging!

These other ISPs that offer the cheaper prices are smart though ... think about it, if they had to offer toll free numbers for support, that would affect their bottom line, and in turn your pockets. People love to abuse these numbers, I know from experience.

So for the perhaps one support call you may need to make from Johannesburg to Cape Town each year, it's definately worth going with the cheaper ISP.

I have terminated my MWEB account. They themselves rate their value added services at R79 per month. As for their EXCELLENT customer support, I have had a running battle with them because everytime I had a problem, they referred me to Telkom, never mind that I told them that I paid them a premium so that I could have a one stop shop. I actually noticed the other day that they have started advertising seriously again and can only say that the two greatest IT based dinosaurs in South Africa at the moment belongs both to NASPERS namely Mweb and Kalahari. Still seriously advertising 192 etc.
However when you change ISP, I suggest that you go to the trouble of actually registering your own domain and get it hosted somewhere, so that nobody in future can tie you down to them because of your email address

I was about to send a e-mail about this since I'm on MWEB. All I can say is that they're a bunch of morons . Since they're the biggest ISP in SA, they should know better - but that is what probably makes them NOT reduce prices - they have enough customers paying rip-off prices.

@Ernstn: I had the exact same experience with them

MWEB is like a junior telkom......Ive emailed them numerous times,I DONT EVEN WANT A REPLY

Oh man, I agree with that. Mweb became the monopoly of the dial-up world. Swollow up the competition and then overcharge the cr@p out of your users.
