Hiya guys,

Got an issue. I'm a home user of MWeb and have been for maybe 10 or so years. Started out with xsinet :D anybody remember them? lol

Anyhow, we've only had ADSL 512 for nigh on 2 years now (Telkom leased line and MWeb 2GB/month paid for separately) and the contract's coming up for renewal in October. The reason we chose MWeb first time was because of a vital business mail account we've got here. Lol, it stil has the @wol.co.za suffix.

Now getting two separate accounts is far out of the question and I've been wondering whether Neotel is a good option. They installed their FO cables not long ago just near the house.

What options do I have? This, of course, keeping in mind the mail account with MWeb.

Thx a mil.

While Mweb is not the best even although I have been with them 11 or 12 years their speeds are stable and I have excellent service(when necessary) from their call centre. My daughter who moved out recently is with Neotel.Speeds are very slow (like ISDN)and not worth the money as far as I am concerned.I think that it depends on the tower saturation of Neotel in the area you live in.Rather try Mweb month to month like I do .I do not sign contracts.

Yes, stay with MWeb on month-to-month. They are only marginally more expensive - in return they have always given me SUPERB service.

I think that milano and I should form a MWEB fan club as no one else on this forum has had good experiences with MWEB.

:D Actually, I think some here criticise them even though they have never actually been MWeb customers. It is just a hatred based on trying to appear more intelligent by dissing one of the largest commercial ISP's.

Largest commercial ISP that rips people off at every turn :P Have fun paying for TV adverts :)

TV adverts = growth of subscriber base = more innovation :)

Have always had brilliant service from them and my line has almost never been down. So as far as I can see, MWeb frankly does a great job. :)

Please explain where they rip people off??? I'm rather curious...

Thx for the advice, will check their prices up first.

You can downgrade the mweb service to just an email account, nothing more, for a small fee a month.

Setup a google mail account. Configure google mail to collect your mweb mail from their pop. It's really easy to do. When you reply to emails they will all originate from your google mail account which people in turn will reply to. Within not to long a time no one will be using your old email address anymore and eventually you can cancel the mweb email address.

This way your email address is independant from any isp and you can move to whichever company you prefer at the drop of a hat.

Another thing to consider, don't lock yourself into another contract. Prices dropping down is "imminent" as people say. If you lock yourself into another contract you are going to be screwing yourself over.

+1 unless they float you on current developments, DO NOT ENTER any broadband contracts at this stage.

In that case, we might just switch to month-to-month contracts with MWeb then. What I really want to do is avoid hassle.

What we've got here right now has worked fantastically for the past 2 years. That is, of course, if you consider THREE separate Telkom modems being returned because of the same fault every time. We got a Siemens unit from them and it's worked faultlessly :) Seems the crew at the Telkom shop in Cresta do a great job. Went in with the faulty modem and came out with a new one within 10 minutes. All for free :D

Anyhow, we shall see what the MWeb guys have to say.

And thx again for the brilliant help guys.

This also misses the point that now your email account is dependent on Google (Gmail). It's independent of local ISPs but dependent on Google itself, which is a company too.

The ideal is to buy a domain name and link account to that, it's possible to do that with Gmail but one can also pay a yearly email hosting fee - probably like $20 or so with a dedicated email provider (not Gmail) - the domain is yours however - and you can easily change providers and still keep your unique email address(es).

Gmail is a biatch for privacy. Sending emails to Gmail accounts means that all of that is shared with Gmail.

+1 on the Gmail idea... it really frees you from any other ISP... including the hassles of having to set up and maintain your own domain. My hosting provider went down far more often than Gmail does... eventually I gave it up. Gmail is free... running your own domain can cost you.

As I have posted before.Month to
month is best.I bought my own router to hell with Telkom and Mweb.If I dont like Mweb service and connection I will change ISP's.Not sure what to do about Telkom though.

Hi,

Just a quick note on GMail. While there's no denying Google provides some really decent online apps, in the SA context they do currently have a limitation, that being they cannot be used on local only traffic.

This is the point of providing a local only traffic allowance bundled together with locally hosted communication services. Exhausting one's blended allowance should not severely impact one's ability to stay in touch e.g. send/recieve emails and place/recieve calls on one's 087 number.
