MWEB cuts fibre prices on Openserve

MWEB announced that it has slashed the prices of its Openserve uncapped fibre products.

The discounted prices will be available to both new and existing customers, and include free installation, connection, and a router.
 
Horrible upload speeds.

My VDSL is better than all 3 packages except for their top-end package.
 
This is my VDSL (copper) speed: 40Mbps / 10Mbps
Average Ping: 28.58ms
Average Download: 36.60Mbps
Average Upload: 9.49Mbps

I have no respect for Mweb and all of the fiber operators who offer BS like 10/2, 20/2 etc.

Fiber must start at 50/50 and go up from there, it's pure pocketing BS happening in the fiber space atm, riding the hype only.

DSL is 20/2
VDSL is 40/10
Fiber needs to be 50/50+
 
As far as I know Openserve does not limit upload to those speeds so maybe Mweb is limiting it on their side with the PPPoE details. Very silly to limit the upload speed as many don't even upload that much unless it's a way to reduce IPC usage for when people do torrent downloads.... :unsure:

It's Mweb that controls the upload limit.

Yeah but they will be 10/5, 20/10, 40/20, 100/50, 200/100 lines anyways so why did they limit the upload?

Hi Cavedog. These products were created to cater for the needs of a variety of clients at a reasonable price. Not all clients require a high upload as they just needed the connection to download or stream. We still offer clients that wants a higher upload a package at a higher price

Hi Thor. Not all areas supports VDSL and Telkom will at some stage switch their copper lines to Fibre. For that reasons various fibre packages were created to suit the needs of all types of clients. Some clients require a fast connection for HD streaming and gaming while some clients just need a connection to email and whatsapp
With ADSL you still need to pay for an analog line and the dsl portion and then the data. With Fibre the voice line is not compulsory

Hi there, will existing clients be kept at the higher upload speed and price or will they be moved to the new lower priced packages by default?

What are you paying in total for your VDSL though?
You have to pay for your Telkom line and ISP, surely that isn't cheaper than fibre these days?

Telephone land line + VDSL.

You say VDSL is not available everywhere, correct. However, ADSL is available nearly everywhere and yet half of your fiber packages are slower than ADSL (upload).

Everything is connected these days. Chromecast, Cameras (smart home), sonoff, Alexa, Google, Samsung.

The future relies on upload speeds (cloud-based services). You MWEB are going against the norm.

If anyone is interested in using smart home technologies then DO NOT use Mweb as your ISP.

Mweb's packages are simply not compatible with a connected/smart home/google drive, Dropbox, one drive lifestyle.

Well at least they will be saving some money on IPC costs when people torrent on these packages. Anything public is a horror show of leeching....

Wish they could this with Vumatel customers. I don't need 50/50 but 50/10 wouldn't be bad
 
Limiting upload makes no commercial sense except as mentioned to mess with bittorrent. Any gamimg experience and for that matter most apps will have a poor user experience.
