384kbps uncapped shaped all-inclusive MWeb account. DNS lookups have been painfully slow over the few days. Any one else experiencing this or have an explanation? Once the lookup is done, speeds are fine. I've not changed any DNS settings -- whatever configuration the router has been using for the past months is what it is using now.

I am finding the same thing on 4 Meg uncapped shaped.

I often have the refresh pages in order to get them to load properly.. but once the page downloads its fast.

Hi,

I am not aware of any DNS issue, I will investigate and feedback.

You could always try 196.220.59.188 196.220.59.189, should work on M-Web and perform well enough + allows the local use of akamai ect.

Hi all

To assist us further in trying to resolve this issue could you please send me your MWEB username.

Sabrewolfy, or anyone else - have you had any further problems in this area?

There still seems to be a somewhat significant "lag" between entering a URL and the page appearing, during which time the Firefox status line reads "Looking up www.example.com". This lead me to think that it was DNS related. Once the lookup is done, pages generally load quickly. The lag is not present for all sites, so possibly it is site/region specific. From my side, consider this "on hold" until I have anything new to add :)

I'll ask the engineers do a general health check on DNS tomorrow in any event. If you come across any specific examples that you think are worth mentioning inbox them to us and we'll pass it on the them for investigation.

see: http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm and http://www.cocacola.za.net/images/dns.txt for test results and additional server ip's - (old test MWEB dropped much further down on list)

I have some different results for you.

Done last year: http://www.restricted.co.za/namebench_2009-12-14_0922.html
New test using same software as you: http://www.restricted.co.za/dns/dns_bench_2010_08_23.txt
or if you prefer an image: http://www.restricted.co.za/dns/dns_bench_2010_08_23.png

From what I can tell, Vodacom's DNS servers do quite a bit better then the Verizon/MTN-Business. Additionally even Neotel's DNS server does better than the Datapro one. This should give people quite a bit more choices on DNS servers to use. All these seem to be open to most SA networks, the SAIX and M-Web ones are locked down according to my initial tests before adding them to the benchmark application.

This is normal, as you are connecting via a different route...
