MWeb fibre a hit or miss?? Thoughts please.

Hi all,

Just moved into a new house and looking at getting fibre, I see Openserve is the only infastructure I have in my area. Looking at getting a 20mbs line as I believe this will cater for my needs. I see the competition for fibre is pretty cut throat with prices averaging around the R800 mark per month for fibre (12 month contract), some ISPs even throw in free router, connection and installation for free with this contract, however Mweb 20mbs line is currently going for R699 with the same connection, installation and router (looks like their own basic router) for free. I noticed that Mweb didnt score very well in the top 2019 ISP list and am a bit hesitant.
Not too sure on my usage but looking at streaming Netflix (4k), DSTV now and youtube. I see they have a FUP but cant find anywhere on the actual amount you can download before they throttle you, unless they unthrottled - find this hard to believe.
Looking for anyone who is with Mweb fibre to please share their thoughts before I join or any other ISPs you might recommend? TIA
 
I'm not with MWEB but they just recently got rid of their FUP. The only draw back is that MWEB shape your upload speed so instead of getting 10Mbps up, you get 4Mbps upload on a 20Mbps line.

There are quite a few ISPs that offer uncapped and unshaped with no FUP on Openserve now. I'm on Openserve 100Mbps with Cool Ideas and it's month-to-month with no FUP and a free router but they did just increase the price of 10 and 20Mbps packages on Openserve, something to take into consideration.

I know Afrihost, Supersonic, WebSquad, Mind The Speed and a few others offer completely unlimited packages on Openserve. I suggest looking at some of those ISPs' threads on the forum to see what customers say about their service and customer support and make your own decision about who to go with.

I've heard good things about Afrihost and I've had good service with Cool Ideas so I would personally recommend those 2, but price is also a consideration. Remember that you get what you pay for.
 
Thanks for the help @DYreX146 . Not too worried on the upload speed however 4Mbps is much slower than other 20Mbps lines. Main thing Im looking at is getting getting constant 20Mbps speeds on an uncapped account.
 
Yeah, hopefully someone that is an MWEB customer can comment on their service but the services you are streaming from are hosted locally so I think most ISPs should have a good connection to them.

It also depends on whether or not MWEB has good peering to Netflix etc. I don't really know much about MWEB but I'm sure someone on the forum can answer your questions. You might find this thread helpful in the meantime: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/please-rate-mweb.1037431/
 
A tenant in my block who recently signed up with MWEB is extremely unhappy with the speed.. he says everything buffers, YouTube, dstv now, showmax, Netflix all of it.. as soon as he can afford to get out of the 12 month contract, he is jumping ship..

Now, I am not going to tell you to not go with MWEB because of this tenant, what I will say, in this day and age, no one should be tying themselves into a contract with an ISP.. the 100bucks a month you save will not be worth it the moment you realise you made the wrong choice when you signed on the dotted line..
 
I'm renting a place and the line is with mweb on octotel. Everything working fine and no complaints from my side. I've never been with another fibre company so I can't compare the service
 
Is there an Mweb Rep on the forum? I just called the Mweb sales department and the disinterest in the sales conculant voice left a bad tasre in my mouth.

If there isnt an Mweb rep that I can work through I might consider staying with Rocketnet

@MWEBHelp is on the forums, I sent them a DM in April which I never got a reply to, though their account says last seen Tues @ 3PM.

Their speed options on Openserve are appealing but after reading a few posts and dealing with their slow support I decided to stick to Afrihost.
 
You really don't want to use Mweb if you can avoid them, there are a lot of other ISP that have better networks and support.
 
Strange been with Mweb 5 years and never had an issue.
 
I am on Mweb, paying R399pm for the 10/2 line. I got it a few months back so its always been on 20/4 because of Covid-19, which should finish at the end of July.
I've had no issues with the line, but it is almost impossible to get hold of anybody at customer service. They never reply to emails and you will be on hold for at least 20 minutes before someone picks up the call from their call centre. I was lucky that my installation happened relatively quickly within a week of signing up, but I have seen tons of messages on social media of people waiting months for their installation. I just hope that my line stays stable and I never need to call customer service ever again.

exactly why i left partly because i could never speak to a warm body to resolve my issues
