Mweb News Server - It ain't workin' no more!

Empie I had the same issue a few months back. Asked mweb to reset my account and it worked. Things were fine on both sides and I had tried many different clients. Couldnt even ping the newshost server, just timed out

Hey Claw

Mweb Guy apparently already did that, but didn't help anything. Maybe he can give it another shot?
Would you mind giving my account another reset, Mweb Guy?

I'm experiencing this EXACT same issue! I also assumed it was due to the "undersea cable issue", but my colleagues with uncapped mweb accounts have no problems downloading from the mweb news server at full speed. I moved from Telkom so I have a brand-spanking-new mweb uncapped account that isn't even 2 weeks old. What a way to greet new customers, mweb! Never thought I'd miss telkom (shudder)

I use SABNZBD newsreader and the "news.mweb.co.za" server (server name, not ip) with port 119. Connection tests are successful and I can see that connections are indeed established. Problem is I'm stuck at 0kb/s and it just stays like that! The most I've been able to download via news server in the last 1.5 weeks was 80mb (as in megabytes), which would be great if I wanted to download a few Windows 95 desktop themes, but alas, that is not the case.

Can anyone give me any sort of advice? Who do I talk to regarding this issue?

EDIT: I only download after hours (6pm to 6am), so I don't think I'm being throttled. Couldn't move a single kb of data through the mweb news server last night - newsreader was running all night long

Mine is working ok. Did you leave your user name and password field blank, as well as set connections to 1?

I finally got 1 connection to download at a decent speed yesterday. But it only lasted for 3 hours or so, then it dropped and when it connected again it was stuck again at 0Kb/s. Been reseting my router regularly since seacom issues has been resolved. Torrents are also dragging at 2 to 3Kb/s... at best. Its only browsing thats decent, although I do get the 'connection timeout' every now and then.
With Seacom fixed up, are there anything else I should do (like reseting something) to maybe make it work? If seacom was the issue...

Good evening Empie, what are your speeds on the news server at the moment?

Right at this moment? 0Kb/s. Yesterday for that 3 hours it ran at 30Kb/s or so, but only on 1 connection. The rest were still at 0Kb/s.

Are you using the MWEB news server?

news.mweb.co.za : port 119. Thats the one

Please ping news.mweb.co.za and use the IP. Let me know if this makes a difference to your experience. (test)

Got ponged 100%. However, using the IP doesn't work either. Still at 0Kb/s when it's not dropping connection every 5 seconds.

Empie, can I delete your current session; perhaps connecting with a new IP helps?

Aaaand...nothing yet. Unless you havn't reseted my session yet, Mweb Guy? Please let me know when you did. Thanks!

Username and password are blank. Connections are set to 4. Using the same settings as one of my colleagues who is also on mweb uncapped 1mbps. I also seem to be gettin warnings in the logs in the line of "Unable to save --filename--"
Everything worked fine while on Telkom. All I did was change my account details on my router and the news server details on my news reader (sabnzbd) to the mweb settings. Server Connection tests are successful.

I'm gatvol of the news server issues...

Cancelled my account yesterday. Moving on to another account to see how they perform.

Haven't been able to connect to the news server for almost a month now, but before seacom went down, it was fine!

All the 'mweb guys' tell me is that their testing area works fine.

There has been something wrong with my mweb account! If I connect using a saix username and password, I can download from news.mweb.co.za:119. Put my mweb account back in, and nothing. So you tell me what the problem is!? :p

Anyway, I'm out from Jan 12

I had to grab a few more gigs from WA (which ain't cheap) just to do some catching up, since I'm more than a month behind.
So what's the point of having an mweb account then if I still need to run to other ISP's just to do some simple downloading?

I finally settled on Openweb's Gold account. Will give it a try and see how it performs. Can't be worse than something that doesn't work at all.
I'm giving mweb until the end of this week, then I'm moving on.

Im still struggling. I installed a new usenet client: Unzbin. This specific news reader indicates connection activity a lot better than SABNZBD so I could beter understand why I cant download.

The connection status changes from "connecting" to "authenticating" and then "downloading" and then immediately after it changes to "disconnected". This happens over and over again on all connections. The news server keeps on disconnecting me the whole time. I cannot hold on to a connection for longer than 1 second.

According to mweb there is nothing wrong with my account.

Does anyone have any idea why this may be happening? Is the news server overloaded or limited? And why do some users connect without a problem and at full speed and others just cannot connect at all?
