Mweb News Server - It ain't workin' no more!

Thanks for the update, Will :) It is important for me to know that the matter is indeed being addressed and not lying at the bottom of a pile on someones desk. Your efforts in the matter do not go unappreciated.

No problem guiver

I've just caught up with the team now and it seems that we have received feedback from Telkom indicating that they are not picking up any congestion on that exchange.

I've chatted to MWEB Guy now and asked that they gather some more data from yourself and anyone else affected by this issue so that we can try and determine the exact nature of the problem.

Hi Guys,

We have received feedback from Telkom regarding the congestion check.
They have confirmed that there is no congestion on the exchange.

So to better understand what is causing the problem I will require some additional info which I can take to our engineers.
Could you please test over the next 24hrs and advise what sort of speeds you are getting at certain times during the day.

08:00 am
11:00 am
16:00 pm
20:00 pm
23:00 pm
04:00 am

Once you have all these results please PM me or post it here and include which application you are using as well as the news server you are connecting to.
I will then take the results and make sure it’s passed along to the relevant persons.

Kind regards,
MWEB Guy

Speed is not the problem. I get close to full line speed on P2P and HTTP downloads anytime I'm online, day or night. The problem is that my Newsreader cannot keep a connection to the mweb news server.
I have tried sabnzbd, grabbit, alt-binz, but recently changed to unzbin because it has a better connection monitoring interface.
I use the news.mweb.co.za as news server (no username or password) on port 119. The connection monitor shows that a connection was made, but is then immediately disconnected. The connection is then idle for 2 seconds and then attempts to connect again only to be disconnected again. This goes on and on. If I leave it on long enough it occasionally holds on to a connection for long enough to download a few mb at decent speeds before the connection gets disconnected again. My line speed is perfectly fine if I try to download via http or p2p. The mweb news server just wont allow me to stay connected to it.

I will record data with the online broadband speed test utility (http://testmy.net/auto) and report detailed findings.

Same here. Everything else runs at decent speed. I just can't hold a connection to the news server. Keeps connecting and disconnecting, and sometimes, like once every 5 days, I can grab a few megs before it cuts off again.
I mainly use Alt.Binz, but have tried GrabIt and SABnz. I tried both news.mweb.co.za and the IP version.
I tried WA & IS news servers. They run at full speed.

I'll try my best to run some speed test during those hours, I'm just not always at my PC to do so.

You dont need to be at your pc. Just go to http://testmy.net/auto and set the interval and number of times you want it to run. Just leave your browser open and your pc on and it will do a speed test automatically at the preset times. It then saves all your results to your profile and displays it in a graph.

Thanks guiver

I just started the test. Will post it in 24 hours.

Hi Empie,

What is your actual DL transfer rate?

Regards,

MWEB Guy

It appears as if MWEB news is overloaded. IS and SAIX news has been going full speed all day, yet I'm still struggling to get a single connection to MWEB news, and when I do, it does not last long.

Mweb Guy:

Is this what you're looking for?

I'll do a proper test again tomorrow.

Hi Empie,

Thank you for the information.

The download speed showing in the image is good for a 384 line. Please can you send me the actual download speed you are receiving when you download something.

Regards,
MWEB Guy

Any feedback on the issue yet, Mweb Guy?

Hi guiver,

There is no congestion at the exchange as mentioned before. We have tested on our side and we are connecting to the news server. Please can you try to re-connect and please keep me informed.

Regards,
MWEB Guy

yip same here....news for mweb is down...

Hi drukkie,

There are no reported issues with the news server. Are you getting a connection or not? Any error message you might be getting?

Regards,
MWEB Guy

MWEB Guy, I tried connecting again last night, but got the same issue. Connections keep getting disconnected. I will leave it on overnight tonight to see if it eventually manages to hold on to a connection. Will report tomorrow.
Will it make a difference if I try to connect using the news server IP?

You can try connecting with the IP to see if you will get a connection, there shouldn't be a difference.

Thank you for the feedback and you know where to find me tomorrow.
